Tensile residual stresses combined with an applied tensile stress can reduce the reliability of steel components. Nondestructive evaluation of residual stress is thus important to avoid unintended fatigue or cracking. Because magnetic hysteresis properties of ferromagnetic materials are sensitive to stress, nondestructive evaluation of residual stress through magnetic properties can be expected. The spatial mapping of local magnetic hysteresis properties becomes possible by using the acoustically stimulated electromagnetic (ASEM) method and the tensile stress dependence of the hysteresis properties has been investigated in steel. It is found that the coercivity Hc and the remanent magnetization signal Vr monotonically decrease with increasing the tensile stress. In this work, we verified the detection of residual stresses through the ASEM response in a welded steel plate. Tensile stresses are intentionally introduced on the opposite side of the partially welded face by controlling welding temperatures. We found that Hc and Vr clearly decrease in the welded region, suggesting that the presence of tensile residual stresses is well detected by the hysteresis parameters.

The article is devoted to the improvement of neural network means of recognition of emotions on human geometry, which are defined for use in information systems of general purpose. It is shown that modern means of emotional recognition are based on the usual networks of critical disadvantage, because there is a lack of accuracy of recognition under the influence of purchased, characteristic of general-purpose information systems. It is determined that the above remarks relate to the turning of the face and the size of the image. A typical approach to overcoming this disadvantage through training is unacceptable for all protection options that are inappropriate for reasons of duration and compilation of the required training sample. It is proposed to increase the accuracy of recognition by submitting an expert data model to the neural network. An appropriate method for representing expert knowledge is developed. A feature of the method is the use of productive rules and the PNN neural network. Experimental verification of the developed solutions has been carried out. The obtained results allow to increase the efficiency of the termination and disclosure of the set of age networks, the characteristics of which are not presented in the registered statistical data.

This work proposes an approach to find and learn informative representations from 2 dimensional gray-level images for facial expression recognition application. The learned features are obtained from a designed convolutional neural network (CNN). The developed CNN enables us to learn features from the images in a highly efficient manner by cascading different layers together. The developed model is computationally efficient since it does not consist of a huge number of layers and at the same time it takes into consideration the overfitting problem. The outcomes from the developed CNN are compared to handcrafted features that span texture and shape features. The experiments conducted on the Bosphours database show that the developed CNN model outperforms the handcrafted features when coupled with a Support Vector Machines (SVM) classifier.

Mobile military networks are uniquely challenging to build and maintain, because of their wireless nature and the unfriendliness of the environment, resulting in unreliable and capacity limited performance. Currently, most tactical networks implement TCP/IP, which was designed for fairly stable, infrastructure-based environments, and requires sophisticated and often application-specific extensions to address the challenges of the communication scenario. Information Centric Networking (ICN) is a clean slate networking approach that does not depend on stable connections to retrieve information and naturally provides support for node mobility and delay/disruption tolerant communications - as a result it is particularly interesting for tactical applications. However, despite ICN seems to offer some structural benefits for tactical environments over TCP/IP, a number of challenges including naming, security, performance tuning, etc., still need to be addressed for practical adoption. This document, prepared within NATO IST-161 RTG, evaluates the effectiveness of Named Data Networking (NDN), the de facto standard implementation of ICN, in the context of tactical edge networks and its potential for adoption.

Immersive augmented reality (AR) technologies are becoming a reality. Prior works have identified security and privacy risks raised by these technologies, primarily considering individual users or AR devices. However, we make two key observations: (1) users will not always use AR in isolation, but also in ecosystems of other users, and (2) since immersive AR devices have only recently become available, the risks of AR have been largely hypothetical to date. To provide a foundation for understanding and addressing the security and privacy challenges of emerging AR technologies, grounded in the experiences of real users, we conduct a qualitative lab study with an immersive AR headset, the Microsoft HoloLens. We conduct our study in pairs - 22 participants across 11 pairs - wherein participants engage in paired and individual (but physically co-located) HoloLens activities. Through semi-structured interviews, we explore participants' security, privacy, and other concerns, raising key findings. For example, we find that despite the HoloLens's limitations, participants were easily immersed, treating virtual objects as real (e.g., stepping around them for fear of tripping). We also uncover numerous security, privacy, and safety concerns unique to AR (e.g., deceptive virtual objects misleading users about the real world), and a need for access control among users to manage shared physical spaces and virtual content embedded in those spaces. Our findings give us the opportunity to identify broader lessons and key challenges to inform the design of emerging single-and multi-user AR technologies.

We regularly use communication apps like Facebook and WhatsApp on our smartphones, and the exchange of media, particularly images, has grown at an exponential rate. There are over 3 billion images shared every day on Whatsapp alone. In such a scenario, the management of images on a mobile device has become highly inefficient, and this leads to problems like low storage, manual deletion of images, disorganization etc. In this paper, we present a solution to tackle these issues by automatically classifying every image on a smartphone into a set of predefined categories, thereby segregating spam images from them, allowing the user to delete them seamlessly.

The pattern recognition in the sparse representation (SR) framework has been very successful. In this model, the test sample can be represented as a sparse linear combination of training samples by solving a norm-regularized least squares problem. However, the value of regularization parameter is always indiscriminating for the whole dictionary. To enhance the group concentration of the coefficients and also to improve the sparsity, we propose a new SR model called adaptive sparse representation classifier(ASRC). In ASRC, a sparse coefficient strengthened item is added in the objective function. The model is solved by the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm with variable step to speed up the convergence. Also, a partition strategy for large scale dictionary is adopted to lighten bee's load and removes the irrelevant groups. Through different data sets, we empirically demonstrate the property of the new model and its recognition performance.

3D steganography is used in order to embed or hide information into 3D objects without causing visible or machine detectable modifications. In this paper we rethink about a high capacity 3D steganography based on the Hamiltonian path quantization, and increase its resistance to steganalysis. We analyze the parameters that may influence the distortion of a 3D shape as well as the resistance of the steganography to 3D steganalysis. According to the experimental results, the proposed high capacity 3D steganographic method has an increased resistance to steganalysis.

In video surveillance, face recognition (FR) systems seek to detect individuals of interest appearing over a distributed network of cameras. Still-to-video FR systems match faces captured in videos under challenging conditions against facial models, often designed using one reference still per individual. Although CNNs can achieve among the highest levels of accuracy in many real-world FR applications, state-of-the-art CNNs that are suitable for still-to-video FR, like trunk-branch ensemble (TBE) CNNs, represent complex solutions for real-time applications. In this paper, an efficient CNN architecture is proposed for accurate still-to-video FR from a single reference still. The CCM-CNN is based on new cross-correlation matching (CCM) and triplet-loss optimization methods that provide discriminant face representations. The matching pipeline exploits a matrix Hadamard product followed by a fully connected layer inspired by adaptive weighted cross-correlation. A triplet-based training approach is proposed to optimize the CCM-CNN parameters such that the inter-class variations are increased, while enhancing robustness to intra-class variations. To further improve robustness, the network is fine-tuned using synthetically-generated faces based on still and videos of non-target individuals. Experiments on videos from the COX Face and Chokepoint datasets indicate that the CCM-CNN can achieve a high level of accuracy that is comparable to TBE-CNN and HaarNet, but with a significantly lower time and memory complexity. It may therefore represent the better trade-off between accuracy and complexity for real-time video surveillance applications.

Detecting faces and heads appearing in video feeds are challenging tasks in real-world video surveillance applications due to variations in appearance, occlusions and complex backgrounds. Recently, several CNN architectures have been proposed to increase the accuracy of detectors, although their computational complexity can be an issue, especially for realtime applications, where faces and heads must be detected live using high-resolution cameras. This paper compares the accuracy and complexity of state-of-the-art CNN architectures that are suitable for face and head detection. Single pass and region-based architectures are reviewed and compared empirically to baseline techniques according to accuracy and to time and memory complexity on images from several challenging datasets. The viability of these architectures is analyzed with real-time video surveillance applications in mind. Results suggest that, although CNN architectures can achieve a very high level of accuracy compared to traditional detectors, their computational cost can represent a limitation for many practical real-time applications.

Biometric authentication has been extremely popular in large scale industries. The face biometric has been used widely in various applications. Handling large numbers of face images is a challenging task in authentication of biometric system. It requires large amount of secure storage, where the registered user information can be stored. Maintaining centralized data centers to store the information requires high investment and maintenance cost, therefore there is a need for deployment of cloud services. However as there is no guaranty of the security in the cloud, user needs to implement an additional or extra layer of security before storing facial data of all registered users. In this work a unique cloud based biometric authentication system is developed using Microsoft cognitive face API. Because most of the cloud based biometric techniques are scalable it is paramount to implement a security technique which can handle the scalability. Any users can use this system for single enterprise application base over the entire enterprise application. In this work the identification number which is text information associated with each biometric image is protected by AES algorithm. The proposed technique also works under distributed system in order to have wider accessibility. The system is also being extended to validate the registered user with an image of aadhar card. An accuracy of 96% is achieved with 100 registered users face images and aadhar card images. Earlier research carried out for the development of biometric system either suffers from development of distributed system are security aspects to handle multiple biometric information such as facial image and aadhar card image.

In order to provide reliable security solution to the people, the concept of smart ATM security system based on Embedded Linux platform is suggested in this paper. The study is focused on Design and Implementation of Face Detection based ATM Security System using Embedded Linux Platform. The system is implemented on the credit card size Raspberry Pi board with extended capability of open source Computer Vision (OpenCV) software which is used for Image processing operation. High level security mechanism is provided by the consecutive actions such as initially system captures the human face and check whether the human face is detected properly or not. If the face is not detected properly, it warns the user to adjust him/her properly to detect the face. Still the face is not detected properly the system will lock the door of the ATM cabin for security purpose. As soon as the door is lock, the system will automatic generates 3 digit OTP code. The OTP code will be sent to the watchman's registered mobile number through SMS using GSM module which is connected with the raspberry Pi. Watchman will enter the generated OTP through keypad which is interfaced with the Pi Board. The OTP will be verified and if it is correct then door will be unlock otherwise it will remain lock.

Identity masking methods have been developed in recent years for use in multiple applications aimed at protecting privacy. There is only limited work, however, targeted at evaluating effectiveness of methods-with only a handful of studies testing identity masking effectiveness for human perceivers. Here, we employed human participants to evaluate identity masking algorithms on video data of drivers, which contains subtle movements of the face and head. We evaluated the effectiveness of the “personalized supervised bilinear regression method for Facial Action Transfer (FAT)” de-identification algorithm. We also evaluated an edge-detection filter, as an alternate “fill-in” method when face tracking failed due to abrupt or fast head motions. Our primary goal was to develop methods for humanbased evaluation of the effectiveness of identity masking. To this end, we designed and conducted two experiments to address the effectiveness of masking in preventing recognition and in preserving action perception. 1- How effective is an identity masking algorithm?We conducted a face recognition experiment and employed Signal Detection Theory (SDT) to measure human accuracy and decision bias. The accuracy results show that both masks (FAT mask and edgedetection) are effective, but that neither completely eliminated recognition. However, the decision bias data suggest that both masks altered the participants' response strategy and made them less likely to affirm identity. 2- How effectively does the algorithm preserve actions? We conducted two experiments on facial behavior annotation. Results showed that masking had a negative effect on annotation accuracy for the majority of actions, with differences across action types. Notably, the FAT mask preserved actions better than the edge-detection mask. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate a deidentification method aimed at preserving facial ac- ions employing human evaluators in a laboratory setting.

Incentive-driven advanced attacks have become a major concern to cyber-security. Traditional defense techniques that adopt a passive and static approach by assuming a fixed attack type are insufficient in the face of highly adaptive and stealthy attacks. In particular, a passive defense approach often creates information asymmetry where the attacker knows more about the defender. To this end, moving target defense (MTD) has emerged as a promising way to reverse this information asymmetry. The main idea of MTD is to (continuously) change certain aspects of the system under control to increase the attacker's uncertainty, which in turn increases attack cost/complexity and reduces the chance of a successful exploit in a given amount of time. In this paper, we go one step beyond and show that MTD can be further improved when combined with information disclosure. In particular, we consider that the defender adopts a MTD strategy to protect a critical resource across a network of nodes, and propose a Bayesian Stackelberg game model with the defender as the leader and the attacker as the follower. After fully characterizing the defender's optimal migration strategies, we show that the defender can design a signaling scheme to exploit the uncertainty created by MTD to further affect the attacker's behavior for its own advantage. We obtain conditions under which signaling is useful, and show that strategic information disclosure can be a promising way to further reverse the information asymmetry and achieve more efficient active defense.

With the increasing popularity of wearable devices, information becomes much easily available. However, personal information sharing still poses great challenges because of privacy issues. We propose an idea of Visual Human Signature (VHS) which can represent each person uniquely even captured in different views/poses by wearable cameras. We evaluate the performance of multiple effective modalities for recognizing an identity, including facial appearance, visual patches, facial attributes and clothing attributes. We propose to emphasize significant dimensions and do weighted voting fusion for incorporating the modalities to improve the VHS recognition. By jointly considering multiple modalities, the VHS recognition rate can reach by 51% in frontal images and 48% in the more challenging environment and our approach can surpass the baseline with average fusion by 25% and 16%. We also introduce Multiview Celebrity Identity Dataset (MCID), a new dataset containing hundreds of identities with different view and clothing for comprehensive evaluation.

Keeping a driver focused on the road is one of the most critical steps in insuring the safe operation of a vehicle. The Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) has over 3,100 recorded videos of volunteer drivers during a period of 2 years. This extensive naturalistic driving study (NDS) contains over one million hours of video and associated data that could aid safety researchers in understanding where the driver's attention is focused. Manual analysis of this data is infeasible; therefore efforts are underway to develop automated feature extraction algorithms to process and characterize the data. The real-world nature, volume, and acquisition conditions are unmatched in the transportation community, but there are also challenges because the data has relatively low resolution, high compression rates, and differing illumination conditions. A smaller dataset, the head pose validation study, is available which used the same recording equipment as SHRP2 but is more easily accessible with less privacy constraints. In this work we report initial head pose accuracy using commercial and open source face pose estimation algorithms on the head pose validation data set.

Protecting the privacy of user-identification data is fundamental to protect the information systems from attacks and vulnerabilities. Providing access to such data only to the limited and legitimate users is the key motivation for `Biometrics'. In `Biometric Systems' confirming a user's claim of his/her identity reliably, is more important than focusing on `what he/she really possesses' or `what he/she remembers'. In this paper the use of face image for biometric access is proposed using two multistage face recognition algorithms that employ biometric facial features to validate the user's claim. The proposed algorithms use standard algorithms and classifiers such as EigenFaces, PCA and LDA in stages. Performance evaluation of both proposed algorithms is carried out using two standard datasets, the Extended Yale database and AT&T database. Results using the proposed multi-stage algorithms are better than those using other standard algorithms. Current limitations and possible applications of the proposed algorithms are also discussed along, with further scope of making these robust to pose, illumination and noise variations.

A major issue that arises from mass visual media distribution in modern video sharing, social media and cloud services, is the issue of privacy. Malicious users can use these services to track the actions of certain individuals and/or groups thus violating their privacy. As a result the need to hinder automatic facial image identification in images and videos arises. In this paper we propose a method for de-identifying facial images. Contrary to most de-identification methods, this method manipulates facial images so that humans can still recognize the individual or individuals in an image or video frame, but at the same time common automatic identification algorithms fail to do so. This is achieved by projecting the facial images on a hypersphere. From the conducted experiments it can be verified that this method is effective in reducing the classification accuracy under 10%. Furthermore, in the resulting images the subject can be identified by human viewers.

Nowadays, many computer vision techniques are applied to practical applications, such as surveillance and facial recognition systems. Some of such applications focus on information extraction from the human beings. However, people may feel psychological stress about recording their personal information, such as a face, behavior, and cloth. Therefore, privacy protection of the images and videos is necessary. Specifically, the detection and tracking methods should be used on the privacy protected images. For this purpose, there are some easy methods, such as blurring and pixelating, and they are often used in news programs etc. Because such methods just average pixel values, no important feature for the detection and tracking is left. Hence, the preprocessed images are unuseful. In order to solve this problem, we have proposed shuffle filter and a multi-view face tracking method with a genetic algorithm (GA). The filter protects the privacy by changing pixel locations, and the color information can be preserved. Since the color information is left, the tracking can be achieved by a basic template matching with histogram. Moreover, by using GA instead of sliding window when the subject in the image is searched, it can search more efficiently. However, the tracking accuracy is still low and the preprocessing time is large. Therefore, improving them is the purpose in this research. In the experiment, the improved method is compared with our previous work, CAMSHIFT, an online learning method, and a face detector. The results indicate that the accuracy of the proposed method is higher than the others.

Automated human facial image de-identification is a much needed technology for privacy-preserving social media and intelligent surveillance applications. Other than the usual face blurring techniques, in this work, we propose to achieve facial anonymity by slightly modifying existing facial images into "averaged faces" so that the corresponding identities are difficult to uncover. This approach preserves the aesthesis of the facial images while achieving the goal of privacy protection. In particular, we explore a deep learning-based facial identity-preserving (FIP) features. Unlike conventional face descriptors, the FIP features can significantly reduce intra-identity variances, while maintaining inter-identity distinctions. By suppressing and tinkering FIP features, we achieve the goal of k-anonymity facial image de-identification while preserving desired utilities. Using a face database, we successfully demonstrate that the resulting "averaged faces" will still preserve the aesthesis of the original images while defying facial image identity recognition.

We present the novel concept of Controllable Face Privacy. Existing methods that alter face images to conceal identity inadvertently also destroy other facial attributes such as gender, race or age. This all-or-nothing approach is too harsh. Instead, we propose a flexible method that can independently control the amount of identity alteration while keeping unchanged other facial attributes. To achieve this flexibility, we apply a subspace decomposition onto our face encoding scheme, effectively decoupling facial attributes such as gender, race, age, and identity into mutually orthogonal subspaces, which in turn enables independent control of these attributes. Our method is thus useful for nuanced face de-identification, in which only facial identity is altered, but others, such gender, race and age, are retained. These altered face images protect identity privacy, and yet allow other computer vision analyses, such as gender detection, to proceed unimpeded. Controllable Face Privacy is therefore useful for reaping the benefits of surveillance cameras while preventing privacy abuse. Our proposal also permits privacy to be applied not just to identity, but also to other facial attributes as well. Furthermore, privacy-protection mechanisms, such as k-anonymity, L-diversity, and t-closeness, may be readily incorporated into our method. Extensive experiments with a commercial facial analysis software show that our alteration method is indeed effective.
