Intelligent Environments (IEs) enrich the physical world by connecting it to software applications in order to increase user comfort, safety and efficiency. IEs are often supported by wireless networks of smart sensors and actuators, which offer multi-year battery life within small packages. However, existing radio mesh networks suffer from high latency, which precludes their use in many user interface systems such as real-time speech, touch or positioning. While recent advances in optical networks promise low end-to-end latency through symbol-synchronous transmission, current approaches are power hungry and therefore cannot be battery powered. We tackle this problem by introducing BoboLink, a mesh network that delivers low-power and low-latency optical networking through a combination of symbol-synchronous transmission and a novel wake-up technology. BoboLink delivers mesh-wide wake-up in 1.13ms, with a quiescent power consumption of 237µW. This enables building-wide human computer interfaces to be seamlessly delivered using wireless mesh networks for the first time.

The recent events regarding worldwide human health sped up research efforts and resulted in the tremendous development of new technologies and applications. The last decade proved that new technologies find a proper place in worldwide human health and wellbeing, therefore the security of data during wireless transmission in medical facilities and for medical devices has become a research area of considerable importance. To provide enhanced security using conventional visible light wireless communication, we propose in this paper a novel communication protocol based on asymmetric encryption with a private key. We base the wireless communication protocol described in this work on a data encryption method using block chipers, and we propose it for medical facilities and devices with visible light transmission technology embedded. The asymmetric encryption with a private key algorithm, as part of a transmission protocol, aim to assure the security of sensitive medical data during wireless communication.

Increasing incidents of cyber attacks and evolution of quantum computing poses challenges to secure existing information and communication technologies infrastructure. In recent years, quantum key distribution (QKD) is being extensively researched, and is widely accepted as a promising technology to realize secure networks. Optical fiber networks carry a huge amount of information, and are widely deployed around the world in the backbone terrestrial, submarine, metro, and access networks. Thus, instead of using separate dark fibers for quantum communication, integration of QKD with the existing classical optical networks has been proposed as a cost-efficient solution, however, this integration introduces new research challenges. In this paper, we do a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art QKD secured optical networks, which is going to shape communication networks in the coming decades. We elucidate the methods and protocols used in QKD secured optical networks, and describe the process of key establishment. Various methods proposed in the literature to address the networking challenges in QKD secured optical networks, specifically, routing, wavelength and time-slot allocation (RWTA), resiliency, trusted repeater node (TRN) placement, QKD for multicast service, and quantum key recycling are described and compared in detail. This survey begins with the introduction to QKD and its advantages over conventional encryption methods. Thereafter, an overview of QKD is given including quantum bits, basic QKD system, QKD schemes and protocol families along with the detailed description of QKD process based on the Bennett and Brassard-84 (BB84) protocol as it is the most widely used QKD protocol in the literature. QKD system are also prone to some specific types of attacks, hence, we describe the types of quantum hacking attacks on the QKD system along with the methods used to prevent them. Subsequently, the process of point-to-point mechanism of QKD over an optical fiber link is described in detail using the BB84 protocol. Different architectures of QKD secured optical networks are described next. Finally, major findings from this comprehensive survey are summarized with highlighting open issues and challenges in QKD secured optical networks.

Dynamic properties of optical signals in fiber channel provide a unique, random and reciprocal source for physical-layer secure key generation and distribution (SKGD). In this paper, an inherent physical-layer SKGD scheme is proposed and demonstrated, where the random source is originated from the dynamic fluctuation of the instant state of polarization (SOP) of optical signals in fiber. Due to the channel reciprocity, highly-correlated fluctuation of Stokes parameter of SOP is shared between the legal partners, where an error-free key generation rate (KGR) of 196-bit/s is successfully demonstrated over 25-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). In addition, an active polarization scrambler is deployed in fiber to increase the KGR, where an error-free KGR of 200-kbit/s is achieved.

With the traffic growth with different deterministic transport and isolation requirements in radio access networks (RAN), Flexible Ethernet (FlexE) over wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network is as a candidate for next generation RAN transport, and the security issue in RAN transport is much more obvious, especially the eavesdropping attack in physical layer. Therefore, in this work, we put forward a cross-layer design for security enhancement through leveraging universal Hashing based FlexE data block permutation and multiple parallel fibre transmission for anti-eavesdropping in end-to-end FlexE over WDM network. Different levels of attack ability are considered for measuring the impact on network security and resource utilization. Furthermore, the trade-off problem between efficient resource utilization and guarantee of higher level of security is also explored. Numerical results demonstrate the cross-layer defense strategies are effective to struggle against intruders with different levels of attack ability.

Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA) is an inevitable innovation to cope up with the impediments of regularly expanding information traffic and numerous user accesses in optical systems. In Spectral Amplitude Coding (SAC)-OCDMA systems cross correlation and Multiple Access Interference (MAI) are utmost concerns. For eliminating the cross correlation, reducing the MAI and to enhance the security, in this work, all optical Diagonal Identity Matrices codes (DIM) with Zero Cross-Correlation (ZCC) and optical gating are presented. Chip rate of the proposed work is 0.03 ns and total 60 users are considered with semiconductor optical amplifier based AND operation. Effects of optical gating are analyzed in the presence/absence of eavesdropper in terms of Q factor and received extinction ratio. Proposed system has advantages for service provider because this is mapping free technique and can be easily designed for large number of users.

Optical burst switching (OBS) is a candidate switching paradigm for future backbone all-optical networks. However, data burst contention can be a major problem especially as the number of lightpath connections as well as the overall network radius increases. Furthermore, the absence of or limited buffering provision in core nodes, coupled with the standard one-way resources signaling aggravate contention occurrences resulting in some of the contending bursts being discarded as a consequence. Contention avoidance as well as resolution measures can be applied in such networks in order to resolve any contention issues. In that way, the offered quality of service (QoS) as well as the network performance will remain consistent and reliable. In particular, to maintain the cost effectiveness of OBS deployment, restricted intermediate buffering can be implemented to buffer contending bursts that have already traversed much of the network on their way to the intended destination. Hence in this paper we propose and analyze a restricted intermediate Node Buffering-based routing and wavelength assignment scheme (RI-RWA) scheme to address contention occurrences as well as prevent deletion of contending bursts. The scheme primarily prioritizes the selection of primary as well as deflection paths for establishing lightpath connections paths as a function of individual wavelength contention performances. It further facilitates and allows partial intermediate buffering provisioning for any data bursts that encounter contention after having already propagated more than half the network's diameter. We evaluate the scheme's performance by simulation and obtained results show that the scheme indeed does improve on key network performance metrics such as fairness, load balancing as well as throughput.

The Web ecosystem has been evolving over the past years and new Internet protocols, namely HTTP/2 over TLS/TCP and QUIC/UDP, are now used to deliver Web contents. Similarly, CDNs (Content Delivery Network) are deployed worldwide, caching contents close to end-users to optimize web browsing quality. We present in this paper an analysis of the influence of the Internet protocols and CDN on the Top 10,000 Alexa websites, based on a 12-month measurement campaign (from April 2018 to April 2019) performed via our tool Web View [1]. Part of our measurements are made public, represented on a monitoring website1, showing the results for the Top 50 Alexa Websites plus few specific websites and 8 french websites, suggested by the French Agency in charge of regulating telecommunications. Our analysis of this long-term measurement campaign allows to better analyze the delivery of public websites. For instance, it shows that even if some argue that QUIC optimizes the quality, it is not observed in the real-life since QUIC is not largely deployed. Our method for analyzing CDN delivery in the Web browsing allows us to evaluate its influence, which is important since their usage can decrease the web pages' loading time, on average 43.1% with HTTP/2 and 38.5% with QUIC, when requesting a second time the same home page.

We propose a secure key generation and distribution scheme for data encryption in classical optical fiber channel. A Delay interferometer (DI) is used to track the random phase fluctuation inside fiber, while the reconfigurable lengths of polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber are set as the source of optical phase fluctuations. The output signals from DI are extracted as the secret key and shared between the two-legal transmitter and receiver. Because of the randomness of local environment and the uniqueness of fiber channel, the phase fluctuation between orthogonal polarization modes (OPMs) can be used as secure keys to enhance the level of security in physical layer. Experimentally, we realize the random key generation and distribution over 25-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). Moreover, the proposed key generation scheme has the advantages of low cost, compatible with current optical fiber networks and long distance transmission with optical amplifiers.

The use of quantum mechanical signals in communication opens up the opportunity to build new communication systems that accomplishes tasks that communication with classical signals structures cannot achieve. Prominent examples are Quantum Key Distribution Protocols, which allows the generation of secret keys without computational assumptions of adversaries. Over the past decade, protocols have been developed that achieve tasks that can also be accomplished with classical signals, but the quantum version of the protocol either uses less resources, or leaks less information between the involved parties. The gap between quantum and classical can be exponential in the input size of the problems. Examples are the comparison of data, the scheduling of appointments and others. Until recently, it was thought that these protocols are of mere conceptual value, but that the quantum advantage could not be realized. We changed that by developing quantum optical versions of these abstract protocols that can run with simple laser pulses, beam-splitters and detectors. [1-3] By now the first protocols have been successfully implemented [4], showing that a quantum advantage can be realized. The next step is to find and realize protocols that have a high practical value.

Wireless communication based on optical spectrum has been a promising technology to support increasing bandwidth demand in the recent years. Light fidelity, optical camera communication, visible light communication, underwater optical wireless communication, free space optical communication are such technologies those have been already deployed to support the challenges in wireless communications. Those technologies create massive data traffic as lots of infrastructures and servers are connected with the internet. Software defined optical wireless networks have been introduced in this paper as a solution to this phenomenon. An architecture has been designed where we provide the general software defined networking (SDN) structure and describe the possible tasks which can be performed by the SDN for optical wireless communication.

The assessment of networks is frequently accomplished by using time-consuming analysis tools based on simulations. For example, the blocking probability of networks can be estimated by Monte Carlo simulations and the network resilience can be assessed by link or node failure simulations. We propose in this paper to use Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) to predict the robustness of networks based on simple topological metrics to avoid time-consuming failure simulations. We accomplish the training process using supervised learning based on a historical database of networks. We compare the results of our proposal with the outcome provided by targeted and random failures simulations. We show that our approach is faster than failure simulators and the ANN can mimic the same robustness evaluation provide by these simulators. We obtained an average speedup of 300 times.

Singh, S. K., Bziuk, W., Jukan, A..  2016.  Balancing Data Security and Blocking Performance with Spectrum Randomization in Optical Networks. 2016 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM). :1–7.

Data randomization or scrambling has been effectively used in various applications to improve the data security. In this paper, we use the idea of data randomization to proactively randomize the spectrum (re)allocation to improve connections' security. As it is well-known that random (re)allocation fragments the spectrum and thus increases blocking in elastic optical networks, we analyze the tradeoff between system performance and security. To this end, in addition to spectrum randomization, we utilize an on-demand defragmentation scheme every time a request is blocked due to the spectrum fragmentation. We model the occupancy pattern of an elastic optical link (EOL) using a multi-class continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) under the random-fit spectrum allocation method. Numerical results show that although both the blocking and security can be improved for a particular so-called randomization process (RP) arrival rate, while with the increase in RP arrival rate the connections' security improves at the cost of the increase in overall blocking.

Physical impairments in long-haul optical networks mandate that optical signals be regenerated within the (so-called translucent) network. Being expensive devices, regenerators are expected to be allocated sparsely and must be judiciously utilized. Next-generation optical-transport networks will include multiple domains with diverse technologies, protocols, granularities, and carriers. Because of confidentiality and scalability concerns, the scope of network-state information (e.g., topology, wavelength availability) may be limited to within a domain. In such networks, the problem of routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) aims to find an adequate route and wavelength(s) for lightpaths carrying end-to-end service demands. Some state information may have to be explicitly exchanged among the domains to facilitate the RWA process. The challenge is to determine which information is the most critical and make a wise choice for the path and wavelength(s) using the limited information. Recently, a framework for multidomain path computation called backward-recursive path-computation (BRPC) was standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force. In this paper, we consider the RWA problem for connections within a single domain and interdomain connections so that the quality of transmission (QoT) requirement of each connection is satisfied, and the network-level performance metric of blocking probability is minimized. Cross-layer heuristics that are based on dynamic programming to effectively allocate the sparse regenerators are developed, and extensive simulation results are presented to demonstrate their effectiveness.
