Visible to the public Learning to Walk - Optimal Gait Synthesis and Online Learning for Terrain-Aware Legged Locomotion

Abstract:

The goal of the proposed research is to advance the science of cyber-physical systems by more explicitly tying sensing, perception, and computing to the optimization and control of physical systems whose properties are variable and uncertain. The CPS platform to be studied is that of a bipedal robot locomoting over granular ground material with uncertain physical properties (sand, gravel, dirt, etc.).

Visible to the public Driving Research: Advances in Methods

Abstract:

At a high level, the goal of this project is to collect data on how drivers approach and drive through intersections. Research at the University of Michigan concerns the development of the driving simulator scenarios and testing human subjects. In addition, considerable related research is being conducted on research methods. At MIT, models based on the research at Michigan are being developed. This abstract concerns those part of the project conducted at the University of Michigan.

Visible to the public CPS Medium: Collaborative Research: CyberMech, a Novel Run-Time Substrate for Cyber-Mechanical Systems

Abstract:

Growing demands on our civil infrastructure have heightened the need for smart structural components and systems whose behavior and performance can be controlled under a variety of loading scenarios such as high winds and earthquakes.

Visible to the public CPS: Breakthrough: From Whole-Hand Tactile Imaging to Interactive Simulation

Abstract:

This project aims to enable cyber-physical systems that can be worn on the body in order to one day allow their users to touch, feel, and manipulate computationally simulated three-dimensional objects or digital data in physically realistic ways, using the whole hand. It will do this by precisely measuring touch and movement-induced displacements of the skin in the hand, and by reproducing these signals interactively, via new technologies to be developed in the project.

Visible to the public EAGER: Aerial Communication Infrastructure for Smart Emergency Response

Abstract:

The objective of this proposal is to exploit an early concept of a flexible, low-cost, and drone-carried broadband long-distance communication infrastructure and investigate its capability for immediate smart-city application in emergency response.
