Jawdeh, Shaya Abou, Choi, Seungdeog, Liu, Chung-Hung.  2022.  Model-Based Deep Learning for Cyber-Attack Detection in Electric Drive Systems. 2022 IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC). :567–573.
Modern cyber-physical systems that comprise controlled power electronics are becoming more internet-of-things-enabled and vulnerable to cyber-attacks. Therefore, hardening those systems against cyber-attacks becomes an emerging need. In this paper, a model-based deep learning cyber-attack detection to protect electric drive systems from cyber-attacks on the physical level is proposed. The approach combines the model physics with a deep learning-based classifier. The combination of model-based and deep learning will enable more accurate cyber-attack detection results. The proposed cyber-attack detector will be trained and simulated on a PM based electric drive system to detect false data injection attacks on the drive controller command and sensor signals.

Li, Hongwei, Chasaki, Danai.  2022.  Network-Based Machine Learning Detection of Covert Channel Attacks on Cyber-Physical Systems. 2022 IEEE 20th International Conference on Industrial Informatics (INDIN). :195–201.
Most of the recent high-profile attacks targeting cyber-physical systems (CPS) started with lengthy reconnaissance periods that enabled attackers to gain in-depth understanding of the victim’s environment. To simulate these stealthy attacks, several covert channel tools have been published and proven effective in their ability to blend into existing CPS communication streams and have the capability for data exfiltration and command injection. In this paper, we report a novel machine learning feature engineering and data processing pipeline for the detection of covert channel attacks on CPS systems with real-time detection throughput. The system also operates at the network layer without requiring physical system domain-specific state modeling, such as voltage levels in a power generation system. We not only demonstrate the effectiveness of using TCP payload entropy as engineered features and the technique of grouping information into network flows, but also pitch the proposed detector against scenarios employing advanced evasion tactics, and still achieve above 99% detection performance.
Chen, Jianhua, Yang, Wenchuan, Cui, Can, Zhang, Yang.  2022.  Research and Implementation of Intelligent Detection for Deserialization Attack Traffic. 2022 4th International Academic Exchange Conference on Science and Technology Innovation (IAECST). :1206–1211.
In recent years, as an important part of the Internet, web applications have gradually penetrated into life. Now enterprises, units and institutions are using web applications regardless of size. Intrusion detection to effectively identify malicious traffic has become an inevitable requirement for the development of network security technology. In addition, the proportion of deserialization vulnerabilities is increasing. Traditional intrusion detection mostly focuses on the identification of SQL injection, XSS, and command execution, and there are few studies on the identification of deserialization attack traffic. This paper use a method to extracts relevant features from the deserialized traffic or even the obfuscated deserialized traffic by reorganizing the traffic and running the relevant content through simulation, and combines deep learning technology to make judgments to efficiently identify deserialization attacks. Finally, a prototype system was designed to capture related attacks in real-world. The technology can be used in the field of malicious traffic detection and help combat Internet crimes in the future.
Zhu, Lei, Huang, He, Gao, Song, Han, Jun, Cai, Chao.  2022.  False Data Injection Attack Detection Method Based on Residual Distribution of State Estimation. 2022 12th International Conference on CYBER Technology in Automation, Control, and Intelligent Systems (CYBER). :724–728.
While acquiring precise and intelligent state sensing and control capabilities, the cyber physical power system is constantly exposed to the potential cyber-attack threat. False data injection (FDI) attack attempts to disrupt the normal operation of the power system through the coupling of cyber side and physical side. To deal with the situation that stealthy FDI attack can bypass the bad data detection and thus trigger false commands, a system feature extraction method in state estimation is proposed, and the corresponding FDI attack detection method is presented. Based on the principles of state estimation and stealthy FDI attack, we analyze the impacts of FDI attack on measurement residual. Gaussian fitting method is used to extract the characteristic parameters of residual distribution as the system feature, and attack detection is implemented in a sliding time window by comparison. Simulation results prove that the proposed attack detection method is effectiveness and efficiency.

Cloud security has become a serious challenge due to increasing number of attacks day-by-day. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) requires an efficient security model for improving security in the cloud. This paper proposes a game theory based model, named as Game Theory Cloud Security Deep Neural Network (GT-CSDNN) for security in cloud. The proposed model works with the Deep Neural Network (DNN) for classification of attack and normal data. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated with CICIDS-2018 dataset. The dataset is normalized and optimal points about normal and attack data are evaluated based on the Improved Whale Algorithm (IWA). The simulation results show that the proposed model exhibits improved performance as compared with existing techniques in terms of accuracy, precision, F-score, area under the curve, False Positive Rate (FPR) and detection rate.

The digital transformation brought on by 5G is redefining current models of end-to-end (E2E) connectivity and service reliability to include security-by-design principles necessary to enable 5G to achieve its promise. 5G trustworthiness highlights the importance of embedding security capabilities from the very beginning while the 5G architecture is being defined and standardized. Security requirements need to overlay and permeate through the different layers of 5G systems (physical, network, and application) as well as different parts of an E2E 5G architecture within a risk-management framework that takes into account the evolving security-threats landscape. 5G presents a typical use-case of wireless communication and computer networking convergence, where 5G fundamental building blocks include components such as Software Defined Networks (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and the edge cloud. This convergence extends many of the security challenges and opportunities applicable to SDN/NFV and cloud to 5G networks. Thus, 5G security needs to consider additional security requirements (compared to previous generations) such as SDN controller security, hypervisor security, orchestrator security, cloud security, edge security, etc. At the same time, 5G networks offer security improvement opportunities that should be considered. Here, 5G architectural flexibility, programmability and complexity can be harnessed to improve resilience and reliability. The working group scope fundamentally addresses the following: •5G security considerations need to overlay and permeate through the different layers of the 5G systems (physical, network, and application) as well as different parts of an E2E 5G architecture including a risk management framework that takes into account the evolving security threats landscape. •5G exemplifies a use-case of heterogeneous access and computer networking convergence, which extends a unique set of security challenges and opportunities (e.g., related to SDN/NFV and edge cloud, etc.) to 5G networks. Similarly, 5G networks by design offer potential security benefits and opportunities through harnessing the architecture flexibility, programmability and complexity to improve its resilience and reliability. •The IEEE FNI security WG's roadmap framework follows a taxonomic structure, differentiating the 5G functional pillars and corresponding cybersecurity risks. As part of cross collaboration, the security working group will also look into the security issues associated with other roadmap working groups within the IEEE Future Network Initiative.

Topic modeling algorithms from the natural language processing (NLP) discipline have been used for various applications. For instance, topic modeling for the product recommendation systems in the e-commerce systems. In this paper, we briefly reviewed topic modeling applications and then described our proposed idea of utilizing topic modeling approaches for cyber threat intelligence (CTI) applications. We improved the previous work by implementing BERTopic and Top2Vec approaches, enabling users to select their preferred pre-trained text/sentence embedding model, and supporting various languages. We implemented our proposed idea as the new topic modeling module for the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) Maryam: Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) framework. We also described our experiment results using a leaked hacker forum dataset (nulled.io) to attract more researchers and open-source communities to participate in the Maryam project of OWASP Foundation.
Huang, Wenwei, Cao, Chunhong, Hong, Sixia, Gao, Xieping.  2022.  ISTA-based Adaptive Sparse Sampling Network for Compressive Sensing MRI Reconstruction. 2022 IEEE International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedicine (BIBM). :999–1004.
The compressed sensing (CS) method can reconstruct images with a small amount of under-sampling data, which is an effective method for fast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). As the traditional optimization-based models for MRI suffered from non-adaptive sampling and shallow” representation ability, they were unable to characterize the rich patterns in MRI data. In this paper, we propose a CS MRI method based on iterative shrinkage threshold algorithm (ISTA) and adaptive sparse sampling, called DSLS-ISTA-Net. Corresponding to the sampling and reconstruction of the CS method, the network framework includes two folders: the sampling sub-network and the improved ISTA reconstruction sub-network which are coordinated with each other through end-to-end training in an unsupervised way. The sampling sub-network and ISTA reconstruction sub-network are responsible for the implementation of adaptive sparse sampling and deep sparse representation respectively. In the testing phase, we investigate different modules and parameters in the network structure, and perform extensive experiments on MR images at different sampling rates to obtain the optimal network. Due to the combination of the advantages of the model-based method and the deep learning-based method in this method, and taking both adaptive sampling and deep sparse representation into account, the proposed networks significantly improve the reconstruction performance compared to the art-of-state CS-MRI approaches.

SC22: International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis. :1–18.
Derivatives are key to numerous science, engineering, and machine learning applications. While existing tools generate derivatives of programs in a single language, modern parallel applications combine a set of frameworks and languages to leverage available performance and function in an evolving hardware landscape. We propose a scheme for differentiating arbitrary DAG-based parallelism that preserves scalability and efficiency, implemented into the LLVM-based Enzyme automatic differentiation framework. By integrating with a full-fledged compiler backend, Enzyme can differentiate numerous parallel frameworks and directly control code generation. Combined with its ability to differentiate any LLVM-based language, this flexibility permits Enzyme to leverage the compiler tool chain for parallel and differentiation-specitic optimizations. We differentiate nine distinct versions of the LULESH and miniBUDE applications, written in different programming languages (C++, Julia) and parallel frameworks (OpenMP, MPI, RAJA, Julia tasks, MPI.jl), demonstrating similar scalability to the original program. On benchmarks with 64 threads or nodes, we find a differentiation overhead of 3.4–6.8× on C++ and 5.4–12.5× on Julia.

Binary analysis is pervasively utilized to assess software security and test vulnerabilities without accessing source codes. The analysis validity is heavily influenced by the inferring ability of information related to the code compilation. Among the compilation information, compiler type and optimization level, as the key factors determining how binaries look like, are still difficult to be inferred efficiently with existing tools. In this paper, we conduct a thorough empirical study on the binary's appearance under various compilation settings and propose a lightweight binary analysis tool based on the simplest machine learning method, called DIComP to infer the compiler and optimization level via most relevant features according to the observation. Our comprehensive evaluations demonstrate that DIComP can fully recognize the compiler provenance, and it is effective in inferring the optimization levels with up to 90% accuracy. Also, it is efficient to infer thousands of binaries at a millisecond level with our lightweight machine learning model (1MB).
Ezhilarasi, I Evelyn, Clement, J Christopher.  2022.  Threat detection in Cognitive radio networks using SHA-3 algorithm. TENCON 2022 - 2022 IEEE Region 10 Conference (TENCON). :1–6.
Cognitive Radio Network makes intelligent use of the spectrum resources. However, spectrum sensing is vulnerable to numerous harmful assaults. To lower the network's performance, hackers attempt to alter the sensed result. In the fusion centre, blockchain technology is used to make broad judgments on spectrum sensing in order to detect and thwart hostile activities. The sensed local results are hashed using the SHA 3 technique. This improves spectrum sensing precision and effectively thwarts harmful attacks. In comparison to other established techniques like equal gain combining, the simulation results demonstrate higher detection probability and sensing precision. Thus, employing Blockchain technology, cognitive radio network security can be significantly enhanced.

Rafique, Wajid, Hafid, Abdelhakim Senhaji, Cherkaoui, Soumaya.  2022.  Complementing IoT Services Using Software-Defined Information Centric Networks: A Comprehensive Survey. IEEE Internet of Things Journal. 9:23545–23569.
IoT connects a large number of physical objects with the Internet that capture and exchange real-time information for service provisioning. Traditional network management schemes face challenges to manage vast amounts of network traffic generated by IoT services. Software-defined networking (SDN) and information-centric networking (ICN) are two complementary technologies that could be integrated to solve the challenges of different aspects of IoT service provisioning. ICN offers a clean-slate design to accommodate continuously increasing network traffic by considering content as a network primitive. It provides a novel solution for information propagation and delivery for large-scale IoT services. On the other hand, SDN allocates overall network management responsibilities to a central controller, where network elements act merely as traffic forwarding components. An SDN-enabled network supports ICN without deploying ICN-capable hardware. Therefore, the integration of SDN and ICN provides benefits for large-scale IoT services. This article provides a comprehensive survey on software-defined information-centric Internet of Things (SDIC-IoT) for IoT service provisioning. We present critical enabling technologies of SDIC-IoT, discuss its architecture, and describe its benefits for IoT service provisioning. We elaborate on key IoT service provisioning requirements and discuss how SDIC-IoT supports different aspects of IoT services. We define different taxonomies of SDIC-IoT literature based on various performance parameters. Furthermore, we extensively discuss different use cases, synergies, and advances to realize the SDIC-IoT concept. Finally, we present current challenges and future research directions of IoT service provisioning using SDIC-IoT.

Shenoy, Nirmala, Chandraiah, Shreyas Madapura, Willis, Peter.  2022.  Internet Routing with Auto-Assigned Addresses. 2022 32nd International Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference (ITNAC). :70–75.
Key challenges faced in the Internet today can be enumerated as follows: (1) complex route discovery mechanisms (2) latency and instability during link or device failure recovery (3) inadequacy in extending routing and addressing to limited domains, (4) complex interworking of multiple routing protocols at border routers. Routing table sizes increase with increasing number of networks indicating a scalability issue. One approach to address this spiraling complexity and performance challenges is to start fresh and re-think Internet routing and addressing. The Expedited Internet Bypass protocol (EIBP) is such a clean slate approach. In the interim, EIBP works in parallel with IP and has no dependency on layer 3 protocols. We demonstrated EIBP for routing and forwarding in an Autonomous system (AS) in our earlier work. In this article, we demonstrate EIBP for inter-AS routing. We compare EIBP's inter-AS operations and performance to Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) deployed in an intra-AS, inter-AS communications scenario with two AS.

In the recent development of the online cryptocurrency mining platform, Coinhive, numerous websites have employed “Cryptojacking.” They may need the unauthorized use of CPU resources to mine cryptocurrency and replace advertising income. Web cryptojacking technologies are the most recent attack in information security. Security teams have suggested blocking Cryptojacking scripts by using a blacklist as a strategy. However, the updating procedure of the static blacklist has not been able to promptly safeguard consumers because of the sharp rise in “Cryptojacking kidnapping”. Therefore, we propose a Cryptojacking identification technique based on analyzing the user's computer resources to combat the assault technology known as “Cryptojacking kidnapping.” Machine learning techniques are used to monitor changes in computer resources such as CPU changes. The experiment results indicate that this method is more accurate than the blacklist system and, in contrast to the blacklist system, manually updates the blacklist regularly. The misuse of online Cryptojacking programs and the unlawful hijacking of users' machines for Cryptojacking are becoming worse. In the future, information security undoubtedly addresses the issue of how to prevent Cryptojacking and abduction. The result of this study helps to save individuals from unintentionally becoming miners.

Aiming at the current troubles encountered by enterprise employees in their daily work when operating business systems due to web compatibility issues, a dual-core secure browser is designed and developed in the paper based on summarizing the current development status of multi-core browsers, key difficulties and challenges in the field. Based on the Chromium open-source project, the design of a dual-core browser auto-adaptation method is carried out. Firstly, dual-core encapsulation technology is implemented, followed by a study of the core auto-adaptation algorithm, and then a core cookie sharing function is developed based on Hook technology. In addition, the security of the browser is reinforced by designing a cookie manager, adding behavior monitoring functions, and unified platform control to enhance confidentiality and security, providing a safe and secure interface for employees' work and ubiquitous IoT access. While taking security into account, the browser realizes the need for a single browser compatible with all business system web pages of the enterprise, enhancing the operating experience of the client. Finally, the possible future research directions in this field are summarized and prospected.

The 2021 T-Mobile breach conducted by John Erin Binns resulted in the theft of 54 million customers' personal data. The attacker gained entry into T-Mobile's systems through an unprotected router and used brute force techniques to access the sensitive information stored on the internal servers. The data stolen included names, addresses, Social Security Numbers, birthdays, driver's license numbers, ID information, IMEIs, and IMSIs. We analyze the data breach and how it opens the door to identity theft and many other forms of hacking such as SIM Hijacking. SIM Hijacking is a form of hacking in which bad actors can take control of a victim's phone number allowing them means to bypass additional safety measures currently in place to prevent fraud. This paper thoroughly reviews the attack methodology, impact, and attempts to provide an understanding of important measures and possible defense solutions against future attacks. We also detail other social engineering attacks that can be incurred from releasing the leaked data.
Sadlek, Lukáš, Čeleda, Pavel, Tovarňák, Daniel.  2022.  Identification of Attack Paths Using Kill Chain and Attack Graphs. NOMS 2022-2022 IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium. :1–6.
The ever-evolving capabilities of cyber attackers force security administrators to focus on the early identification of emerging threats. Targeted cyber attacks usually consist of several phases, from initial reconnaissance of the network environment to final impact on objectives. This paper investigates the identification of multi-step cyber threat scenarios using kill chain and attack graphs. Kill chain and attack graphs are threat modeling concepts that enable determining weak security defense points. We propose a novel kill chain attack graph that merges kill chain and attack graphs together. This approach determines possible chains of attacker’s actions and their materialization within the protected network. The graph generation uses a categorization of threats according to violated security properties. The graph allows determining the kill chain phase the administrator should focus on and applicable countermeasures to mitigate possible cyber threats. We implemented the proposed approach for a predefined range of cyber threats, especially vulnerability exploitation and network threats. The approach was validated on a real-world use case. Publicly available implementation contains a proof-of-concept kill chain attack graph generator.

With the rapid development of information technology, hacker invasion, Internet fraud and privacy disclosure and other events frequently occur, therefore information security issues become the focus of attention. Protecting the secure transmission of information has become a hot topic in today's research. As the carrier of information, image has the characteristics of vivid image and large amount of information. It has become an indispensable part of people's communication. In this paper, we proposed the key simulation analysis research based on M-J set. The research uses a complex iterative mapping to construct M set. On the basis of the constructed M set, the constructed Julia set is used to form the encryption key. The experimental results show that the generalized M-set has the characteristics of chaotic characteristic and initial value sensitivity, and the complex mapping greatly exaggerates the key space. The research on the key space based on the generalized M-J set is helpful to improve the effect of image encryption.

CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) is a widely used technology to distinguish real users and automated users such as bots. However, the advance of AI technologies weakens many CAPTCHA tests and can induce security concerns. In this paper, we propose a user-friendly text-based CAPTCHA generation method named Robust Text CAPTCHA (RTC). At the first stage, the foregrounds and backgrounds are constructed with font and background images respectively sampled from font and image libraries, and they are then synthesized into identifiable pseudo adversarial CAPTCHAs. At the second stage, we utilize a highly transferable adversarial attack designed for text CAPTCHAs to better obstruct CAPTCHA solvers. Our experiments cover comprehensive models including shallow models such as KNN, SVM and random forest, as well as various deep neural networks and OCR models. Experiments show that our CAPTCHAs have a failure rate lower than one millionth in general and high usability. They are also robust against various defensive techniques that attackers may employ, including adversarially trained CAPTCHA solvers and solvers trained with collected RTCs using manual annotation. Codes available at https://github.com/RulinShao/RTC.

This paper presents CaptchaGG, a model for recognizing linear graphical CAPTCHAs. As in the previous society, CAPTCHA is becoming more and more complex, but in some scenarios, complex CAPTCHA is not needed, and usually, linear graphical CAPTCHA can meet the corresponding functional scenarios, such as message boards of websites and registration of accounts with low security. The scheme is based on convolutional neural networks for feature extraction of CAPTCHAs, recurrent neural forests A neural network that is too complex will lead to problems such as difficulty in training and gradient disappearance, and too simple will lead to underfitting of the model. For the single problem of linear graphical CAPTCHA recognition, the model which has a simple architecture, extracting features by convolutional neural network, sequence modeling by recurrent neural network, and finally classification and recognition, can achieve an accuracy of 96% or more recognition at a lower complexity.

We study semantic security for classical-quantum channels. Our security functions are functional forms of mosaics of combinatorial designs. We extend methods in [25] from classical channels to classical-quantum channels to demonstrate that mosaics of designs ensure semantic security for classical-quantum channels, and are also capacity achieving coding schemes. An advantage of these modular wiretap codes is that we provide explicit code constructions that can be implemented in practice for every channel, given an arbitrary public code.

Blind identification of channel codes is crucial in intelligent communication and non-cooperative signal processing, and it plays a significant role in wireless physical layer security, information interception, and information confrontation. Previous researches show a high computation complexity by manual feature extractions, in addition, problems of indisposed accuracy and poor robustness are to be resolved in a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). For solving these difficulties, based on deep residual shrinkage network (DRSN), this paper proposes a novel recognizer by deep learning technologies to blindly distinguish the type and the parameter of channel codes without any prior knowledge or channel state, furthermore, feature extractions by the neural network from codewords can avoid intricate calculations. We evaluated the performance of this recognizer in AWGN, single-path fading, and multi-path fading channels, the results of the experiments showed that the method we proposed worked well. It could achieve over 85 % of recognition accuracy for channel codes in AWGN channels when SNR is not lower than 4dB, and provide an improvement of more than 5% over the previous research in recognition accuracy, which proves the validation of the proposed method.

In recent years, blockchain technology has become one of the key technical innovation fields in the world. From the simple Bitcoin that can only be transferred at first to the blockchain application ecology that is now blooming, blockchain is gradually building a credible internet of value. However, with the continuous development and application of blockchain, even the blockchain based on cryptography is facing a series of network security problems and has caused great property losses to participants. Therefore, studying blockchain security and accelerating standardization of blockchain security have become the top priority to ensure the orderly and healthy development of blockchain technology. This paper briefly introduces the scope of blockchain security from the perspective of network security, sorts out some existing standards related to blockchain security, and gives some suggestions to promote the development and application of blockchain security standardization.
