Bayesian Network is the popular and important data mining model for representing uncertain knowledge. For large scale data it is often too costly to learn the accurate structure. To resolve this problem, much work has been done on migrating the structure learning algorithms to the MapReduce framework. In this paper, we introduce a distributed hybrid structure learning algorithm by combining the advantages of constraint-based and score-and-search-based algorithms. By reusing the intermediate results of MapReduce, the algorithm greatly simplified the computing work and got good results in both efficiency and accuracy.

Hongyo, K., Kimura, T., Kudo, T., Inoue, Y., Hirata, K..  2017.  Modeling of countermeasure against self-evolving botnets. 2017 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics - Taiwan (ICCE-TW). :227–228.

Machine learning has been widely used and achieved considerable results in various research areas. On the other hand, machine learning becomes a big threat when malicious attackers make use it for the wrong purpose. As such a threat, self-evolving botnets have been considered in the past. The self-evolving botnets autonomously predict vulnerabilities by implementing machine learning with computing resources of zombie computers. Furthermore, they evolve based on the vulnerability, and thus have high infectivity. In this paper, we consider several models of Markov chains to counter the spreading of the self-evolving botnets. Through simulation experiments, this paper shows the behaviors of these models.

Singh, S. K., Bziuk, W., Jukan, A..  2016.  Balancing Data Security and Blocking Performance with Spectrum Randomization in Optical Networks. 2016 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM). :1–7.

Data randomization or scrambling has been effectively used in various applications to improve the data security. In this paper, we use the idea of data randomization to proactively randomize the spectrum (re)allocation to improve connections' security. As it is well-known that random (re)allocation fragments the spectrum and thus increases blocking in elastic optical networks, we analyze the tradeoff between system performance and security. To this end, in addition to spectrum randomization, we utilize an on-demand defragmentation scheme every time a request is blocked due to the spectrum fragmentation. We model the occupancy pattern of an elastic optical link (EOL) using a multi-class continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) under the random-fit spectrum allocation method. Numerical results show that although both the blocking and security can be improved for a particular so-called randomization process (RP) arrival rate, while with the increase in RP arrival rate the connections' security improves at the cost of the increase in overall blocking.

Kozen, Dexter.  2016.  Kolmogorov Extension, Martingale Convergence, and Compositionality of Processes. Proceedings of the 31st Annual ACM/IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science. :692–699.

We show that the Kolmogorov extension theorem and the Doob martingale convergence theorem are two aspects of a common generalization, namely a colimit-like construction in a category of Radon spaces and reversible Markov kernels. The construction provides a compositional denotational semantics for lossless iteration in probabilistic programming languages, even in the absence of a natural partial order.

Chiti, F., Giacomo, D. Di, Fantacci, R., Pierucci, L., Carlini, C..  2016.  Optimized Narrow-Band M2M Systems for Massive Cellular IoT Communications. 2016 IEEE Global Communications Conference (GLOBECOM). :1–6.

Simple connectivity and data requirements together with high lifetime of battery are the main issues for the machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. 3GPP focuses on three main licensed standardizations based on Long Term Evolution (LTE), GSM and clean-slate technologies. The paper considers the last one and proposes a modified slotted-Aloha method to increase the capability of supporting a massive number of low-throughput devices. The proposed method increases the access rate of users belonging to each class considered in the clean-slate standard and consequently the total throughput offered by the system. To derive the mean access rate per class, we use the Markov chain approach and simulation results are provided for scenarios with different data rate and also in terms of cell average delay.

Tatarenko, T..  2015.  1-recall reinforcement learning leading to an optimal equilibrium in potential games with discrete and continuous actions. 2015 54th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control (CDC). :6749–6754.

Game theory serves as a powerful tool for distributed optimization in multiagent systems in different applications. In this paper we consider multiagent systems that can be modeled as a potential game whose potential function coincides with a global objective function to be maximized. This approach renders the agents the strategic decision makers and the corresponding optimization problem the problem of learning an optimal equilibruim point in the designed game. In distinction from the existing works on the topic of payoff-based learning, we deal here with the systems where agents have neither memory nor ability for communication, and they base their decision only on the currently played action and the experienced payoff. Because of these restrictions, we use the methods of reinforcement learning, stochastic approximation, and learning automata extensively reviewed and analyzed in [3], [9]. These methods allow us to set up the agent dynamics that moves the game out of inefficient Nash equilibria and leads it close to an optimal one in both cases of discrete and continuous action sets.

In this paper, we focus on energy management of distributed generators (DGs) and energy storage system (ESS) in microgrids (MG) considering uncertainties in renewable energy and load demand. The MG energy management problem is formulated as a two-stage stochastic programming model based on optimization principle. Then, the optimization model is decomposed into a mixed integer quadratic programming problem by using discrete stochastic scenarios to approximate the continuous random variables. A Scenarios generation approach based on time-homogeneous Markov chain model is proposed to generate simulated time-series of renewable energy generation and load demand. Finally, the proposed stochastic programming model is tested in a typical LV network and solved by Matlab optimization toolbox. The simulation results show that the proposed stochastic programming model has a better performance to obtain robust scheduling solutions and lower the operating cost compared to the deterministic optimization modeling methods.

Since security is increasingly the principal concern in the conception and implementation of software systems, it is very important that the security mechanisms are designed so as to protect the computer systems against cyber attacks. An Intrusion Tolerance Systems play a crucial role in maintaining the service continuity and enhancing the security compared with the traditional security. In this paper, we propose to combine a preventive maintenance with existing intrusion tolerance system to improve the system security. We use a semi-Markov process to model the system behavior. We quantitatively analyze the system security using the measures such as system availability, Mean Time To Security Failure and cost. The numerical analysis is presented to show the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Aduba, C., Won, C. h.  2015.  Resilient cumulant game control for cyber-physical systems. 2015 Resilience Week (RWS). :1–6.

In this paper, we investigate the resilient cumulant game control problem for a cyber-physical system. The cyberphysical system is modeled as a linear hybrid stochastic system with full-state feedback. We are interested in 2-player cumulant Nash game for a linear Markovian system with quadratic cost function where the players optimize their system performance by shaping the distribution of their cost function through cost cumulants. The controllers are optimally resilient against control feedback gain variations. We formulate and solve the coupled first and second cumulant Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equations for the dynamic game. In addition, we derive the optimal players strategy for the second cost cumulant function. The efficiency of our proposed method is demonstrated by solving a numerical example.

What you see is not definitely believable is not a rare case in the cyber security monitoring. However, due to various tricks of camouflages, such as packing or virutal private network (VPN), detecting "advanced persistent threat"(APT) by only signature based malware detection system becomes more and more intractable. On the other hand, by carefully modeling users' subsequent behaviors of daily routines, probability for one account to generate certain operations can be estimated and used in anomaly detection. To the best of our knowledge so far, a novel behavioral analytic framework, which is dedicated to analyze Active Directory domain service logs and to monitor potential inside threat, is now first proposed in this project. Experiments on real dataset not only show that the proposed idea indeed explores a new feasible direction for cyber security monitoring, but also gives a guideline on how to deploy this framework to various environments.

Rrushi, J.L..  2014.  A Steganographic Approach to Localizing Botmasters. Advanced Information Networking and Applications Workshops (WAINA), 2014 28th International Conference on. :852-859.

Law enforcement employs an investigative approach based on marked money bills to track illegal drug dealers. In this paper we discuss research that aims at providing law enforcement with the cyber counterpart of that approach in order to track perpetrators that operate botnets. We have devised a novel steganographic approach that generates a watermark hidden within a honey token, i.e. A decoy Word document. The covert bits that comprise the watermark are carried via secret interpretation of object properties in the honey token. The encoding and decoding of object properties into covert bits follow a scheme based on bijective functions generated via a chaotic logistic map. The watermark is retrievable via a secret cryptographic key, which is generated and held by law enforcement. The honey token is leaked to a botmaster via a honey net. In the paper, we elaborate on possible means by which law enforcement can track the leaked honey token to the IP address of a botmaster's machine.

Datta, E., Goyal, N..  2014.  Security attack mitigation framework for the cloud. Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS), 2014 Annual. :1-6.

Cloud computing brings in a lot of advantages for enterprise IT infrastructure; virtualization technology, which is the backbone of cloud, provides easy consolidation of resources, reduction of cost, space and management efforts. However, security of critical and private data is a major concern which still keeps back a lot of customers from switching over from their traditional in-house IT infrastructure to a cloud service. Existence of techniques to physically locate a virtual machine in the cloud, proliferation of software vulnerability exploits and cross-channel attacks in-between virtual machines, all of these together increases the risk of business data leaks and privacy losses. This work proposes a framework to mitigate such risks and engineer customer trust towards enterprise cloud computing. Everyday new vulnerabilities are being discovered even in well-engineered software products and the hacking techniques are getting sophisticated over time. In this scenario, absolute guarantee of security in enterprise wide information processing system seems a remote possibility; software systems in the cloud are vulnerable to security attacks. Practical solution for the security problems lies in well-engineered attack mitigation plan. At the positive side, cloud computing has a collective infrastructure which can be effectively used to mitigate the attacks if an appropriate defense framework is in place. We propose such an attack mitigation framework for the cloud. Software vulnerabilities in the cloud have different severities and different impacts on the security parameters (confidentiality, integrity, and availability). By using Markov model, we continuously monitor and quantify the risk of compromise in different security parameters (e.g.: change in the potential to compromise the data confidentiality). Whenever, there is a significant change in risk, our framework would facilitate the tenants to calculate the Mean Time to Security Failure (MTTSF) cloud and allow them to adopt a dynamic mitigation plan. This framework is an add-on security layer in the cloud resource manager and it could improve the customer trust on enterprise cloud solutions.

Ming Xiang, Tauch, S., Liu, W..  2014.  Dependability and Resource Optimation Analysis for Smart Grid Communication Networks. Big Data and Cloud Computing (BdCloud), 2014 IEEE Fourth International Conference on. :676-681.

Smart Grid is the trend of next generation power distribution and network management that enable a two -- way interactive communication and operation between consumers and suppliers, so as to achieve intelligent resource management and optimization. The wireless mesh network technology is a promising infrastructure solution to support these smart functionalities, while it has some inherent vulnerabilities and cyber-attack risks to be addressed. As Smart Grid is heavily relying on the underlie communication networks, which makes their security and dependability issues critical to the entire smart grid technology. Several studies have been conducted in the field of Smart Grid security, but few works were focused on the dependability and its associated resource analysis of the control center networks. In this paper, we have investigated the dependability modeling and also resource allocation in redundant communication networks by adopting two mathematical approaches, Reliability Block Diagrams (RBD) and Stochastic Petri Nets (SPNs), to analyze the dependability of control center networks in Smart Grid environment. We have applied our proposed modeling approach in an extensive case study to evaluate the availability of smart gird networks with different redundancy mechanisms. A combination of dependability models and reliability importance are used to analyze the network availability according to the most important components. We also show the variation of network availability in accordance with Mean Time to Failure (MTTF) in different network architectures.

Preserving the availability and integrity of networked computing systems in the face of fast-spreading intrusions requires advances not only in detection algorithms, but also in automated response techniques. In this paper, we propose a new approach to automated response called the response and recovery engine (RRE). Our engine employs a game-theoretic response strategy against adversaries modeled as opponents in a two-player Stackelberg stochastic game. The RRE applies attack-response trees (ART) to analyze undesired system-level security events within host computers and their countermeasures using Boolean logic to combine lower level attack consequences. In addition, the RRE accounts for uncertainties in intrusion detection alert notifications. The RRE then chooses optimal response actions by solving a partially observable competitive Markov decision process that is automatically derived from attack-response trees. To support network-level multiobjective response selection and consider possibly conflicting network security properties, we employ fuzzy logic theory to calculate the network-level security metric values, i.e., security levels of the system's current and potentially future states in each stage of the game. In particular, inputs to the network-level game-theoretic response selection engine, are first fed into the fuzzy system that is in charge of a nonlinear inference and quantitative ranking of the possible actions using its previously defined fuzzy rule set. Consequently, the optimal network-level response actions are chosen through a game-theoretic optimization process. Experimental results show that the RRE, using Snort's alerts, can protect large networks for which attack-response trees have more than 500 nodes.

Lin Chen, Lu Zhou, Chunxue Liu, Quan Sun, Xiaobo Lu.  2014.  Occlusive vehicle tracking via processing blocks in Markov random field. Progress in Informatics and Computing (PIC), 2014 International Conference on. :294-298.

The technology of vehicle video detecting and tracking has been playing an important role in the ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) field during recent years. The occlusion phenomenon among vehicles is one of the most difficult problems related to vehicle tracking. In order to handle occlusion, this paper proposes an effective solution that applied Markov Random Field (MRF) to the traffic images. The contour of the vehicle is firstly detected by using background subtraction, then numbers of blocks with vehicle's texture and motion information are filled inside each vehicle. We extract several kinds of information of each block to process the following tracking. As for each occlusive block two groups of clique functions in MRF model are defined, which represents spatial correlation and motion coherence respectively. By calculating each occlusive block's total energy function, we finally solve the attribution problem of occlusive blocks. The experimental results show that our method can handle occlusion problems effectively and track each vehicle continuously.

Ming Chen, Wenzhong Li, Zhuo Li, Sanglu Lu, Daoxu Chen.  2014.  Preserving location privacy based on distributed cache pushing. Wireless Communications and Networking Conference (WCNC), 2014 IEEE. :3456-3461.

Location privacy preservation has become an important issue in providing location based services (LBSs). When the mobile users report their locations to the LBS server or the third-party servers, they risk the leak of their location information if such servers are compromised. To address this issue, we propose a Location Privacy Preservation Scheme (LPPS) based on distributed cache pushing which is based on Markov Chain. The LPPS deploys distributed cache proxies in the most frequently visited areas to store the most popular location-related data and pushes them to mobile users passing by. In the way that the mobile users receive the popular location-related data from the cache proxies without reporting their real locations, the users' location privacy is well preserved, which is shown to achieve k-anonymity. Extensive experiments illustrate that the proposed LPPS achieve decent service coverage ratio and cache hit ratio with low communication overhead.

Mirmohseni, M., Papadimitratos, P..  2014.  Scaling laws for secrecy capacity in cooperative wireless networks. INFOCOM, 2014 Proceedings IEEE. :1527-1535.

We investigate large wireless networks subject to security constraints. In contrast to point-to-point, interference-limited communications considered in prior works, we propose active cooperative relaying based schemes. We consider a network with nl legitimate nodes and ne eavesdroppers, and path loss exponent α ≥ 2. As long as ne2(log(ne))γ = o(nl) holds for some positive γ, we show one can obtain unbounded secure aggregate rate. This means zero-cost secure communication, given a fixed total power constraint for the entire network. We achieve this result with (i) the source using Wyner randomized encoder and a serial (multi-stage) block Markov scheme, to cooperate with the relays, and (ii) the relays acting as a virtual multi-antenna to apply beamforming against the eavesdroppers. Our simpler parallel (two-stage) relaying scheme can achieve the same unbounded secure aggregate rate when neα/2 + 1 (log(ne))γ+δ(α/2+1) = o(nl) holds, for some positive γ, δ.

Smart grids utilize computation and communication to improve the efficacy and dependability of power generation, transmission, and distribution. As such, they are among the most critical and complex cyber-physical systems. The success of smart grids in achieving their stated goals is yet to be rigorously proven. In this paper, our focus is on improvements (or lack thereof) in reliability. We discuss vulnerabilities in the smart grid and their potential impact on its reliability, both generally and for the specific example of the IEEE-14 bus system. We conclude the paper by presenting a preliminary Markov imbedded systems model for reliability of smart grids and describe how it can be evolved to capture the vulnerabilities discussed.

Li Yumei, Voos, H., Darouach, M..  2014.  Robust H #x221E; cyber-attacks estimation for control systems. Control Conference (CCC), 2014 33rd Chinese. :3124-3129.

This paper deals with the robust H∞ cyber-attacks estimation problem for control systems under stochastic cyber-attacks and disturbances. The focus is on designing a H∞ filter which maximize the attack sensitivity and minimize the effect of disturbances. The design requires not only the disturbance attenuation, but also the residual to remain the attack sensitivity as much as possible while the effect of disturbance is minimized. A stochastic model of control system with stochastic cyber-attacks which satisfy the Markovian stochastic process is constructed. And we also present the stochastic attack models that a control system is possibly exposed to. Furthermore, applying H∞ filtering technique-based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), the paper obtains sufficient conditions that ensure the filtering error dynamic is asymptotically stable and satisfies a prescribed ratio between cyber-attack sensitivity and disturbance sensitivity. Finally, the results are applied to the control of a Quadruple-tank process (QTP) under a stochastic cyber-attack and a stochastic disturbance. The simulation results underline that the designed filters is effective and feasible in practical application.
