Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: Sensor Network-based Lower-Limb Prosthesis Optimization and Control

Abstract:

Objective: A powered prosthesis is one of typical cyber-physical systems (CPS) with a human-in-the- loop. The human and prosthesis interaction is highly complicated; although the human user could learn to manipulate the prosthesis, increased effort from the user would be required. The prosthesis requires tuning to minimize the user's energy expenditure such that the user can use of and interact with the prosthesis effortlessly and with comfort.

Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: Integrated modeling, Analysis and Synthesis of Miniature Medical Devices

Abstract:

This project develops an integrated design and simulation environment for the creation of miniature capsule robots (MCRs). An MCR is a biocompatible Cyber-Physical System (CPS) designed to operate in the human body to accomplish diagnostic or therapeutic tasks (e.g., colonoscopy, abdominal surgery, etc.). A typical MCR has to fulfill three main constraints: safety, low power operation and small size. Advances in miniaturization of electronic devices have made MCRs a reality.

Abstract:

Robotic devices are excellent candidates for delivering repetitive and intensive practice that can restore functional use of the upper limbs, even years after a stroke. Rehabilitation of the wrist and hand in particular are critical for recovery of function, since hands are the primary interface with the world.

Visible to the public Cyber-Physical Integration for Digital Microfluidic Biochips

Abstract:

The goal of this project is to integrate digital microfluidics systems with thin-film photodetectors in the top plate to realize biochemical target sensing using fluorescence. System control, adaptation, and reconfiguration through software will lead to a general-purpose lab-on-chip computing platform, in the same way as programmable computing devices allow multifunctional capabilities via software on a hardware platform.

Visible to the public CPS: Synergy: A Novel Biomechatronic Interface Based on Wearable Dynamic Imaging Sensors

The problem of controlling biomechatronic systems, such as multiarticulating prosthetic hands, involves unique challenges in the science and engineering of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), requiring integration between computational systems for recognizing human functional activity and intent and controlling prosthetic devices to interact with the physical world. Research on this problem has been limited by the difficulties in noninvasively acquiring robust biosignals that allow intuitive and reliable control of multiple degrees of freedom (DoF).

Human users are integral to the operation of safety--critical CPS. The goal of this project is to model and analyze the actions of human users along with possible mistakes that may appear in these interactions. We seek to develop approaches that will help us understand the effect of human operator mistakes on the overall system correctness. Our focus is on medical infusion pumps used to deliver drugs to patients.
