Visible to the public Event-Based Information Acquisition, Learning, and Control in High-Dimensional Cyber-Physical Systems

Abstract:

This year, we continued our research effort on designing optimal decentralized monitoring and control mechanisms for networked infrastructure systems providing demand response services by first focusing on the example of intelligent electric transportation systems. The results are highlighted in this poster. Electric Vehicles (EV) are emerging as one of the primary solutions to make electricity demand elastic.

Visible to the public Managing Uncertainty in the Design of Safety-Critical Aviation Systems

Abstract:

The objective of this research is to create tools to manage uncertainty in the design and certification process of safety-critical aviation systems. The research focuses on three innovative ideas to support this objective. First, probabilistic techniques will be introduced to specify system-level requirements and bound the performance of dynamical components.

Visible to the public Boolean Microgrid

Abstract:

Advances in power semiconductor devices have rapidly paved the way for high-frequency power electronics to the point that high-frequency distributed power systems (HFDPSs) - such as Boolean Microgrid - are increasingly becoming a practical reality, provided the effects of transmission-line length can be mitigated. However, the usage of HFDPSs has been primarily limited to the printed-circuit-board (PCB) level applications because of the transmission-line effect that a power signal encounters as it propagates through the transmission line .

Visible to the public Smart Power Systems of the Future: Foundations for Understanding Volatility and Improving Operational Reliability

Abstract:

GRID 2020: The power grid in the U.S. and many regions of the world is undergoing changes because of new technologies and government mandates. It is believed that smart meters and a smarter grid will lead to more efficient use of our infrastructure. In addition, increased renewable energy integration will provide power at low cost.

Visible to the public Architectural and Algorithmic Solutions for Large Scale PEV Integration into Power Grids

Abstract:

This project designs algorithms for the integration of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PEVs) into the power grid. Specifically, the project will formulate and solve optimization problems critical to various entities in the PEV ecosystem -- PEV owners, commercial charging station owners, aggregators, and distribution companies -- at the distribution / retail level.
