Big Data (BD) is the combination of several technologies which address the gathering, analyzing and storing of massive heterogeneous data. The tremendous spurt of the Internet of Things (IoT) and different technologies are the fundamental incentive behind this enduring development. Moreover, the analysis of this data requires high-performance servers for advanced and parallel data analytics. Thus, data owners with their limited capabilities may outsource their data to a powerful but untrusted environment, i.e., the Cloud. Furthermore, data analytic techniques performed on external cloud may arise various security intimidations regarding the confidentiality and the integrity of the aforementioned; transferred, analyzed, and stored data. To countermeasure these security issues and challenges, several techniques have been addressed. This survey paper aims to summarize and emphasize the security threats within Big Data framework, in addition, it is worth mentioning research work related to Big Data Analytics (BDA).
Hirahara, Shuichi.  2022.  NP-Hardness of Learning Programs and Partial MCSP. 2022 IEEE 63rd Annual Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science (FOCS). :968–979.
A long-standing open question in computational learning theory is to prove NP-hardness of learning efficient programs, the setting of which is in between proper learning and improper learning. Ko (COLT’90, SICOMP’91) explicitly raised this open question and demonstrated its difficulty by proving that there exists no relativizing proof of NP-hardness of learning programs. In this paper, we overcome Ko’s relativization barrier and prove NP-hardness of learning programs under randomized polynomial-time many-one reductions. Our result is provably non-relativizing, and comes somewhat close to the parameter range of improper learning: We observe that mildly improving our inapproximability factor is sufficient to exclude Heuristica, i.e., show the equivalence between average-case and worst-case complexities of N P. We also make progress on another long-standing open question of showing NP-hardness of the Minimum Circuit Size Problem (MCSP). We prove NP-hardness of the partial function variant of MCSP as well as other meta-computational problems, such as the problems MKTP* and MINKT* of computing the time-bounded Kolmogorov complexity of a given partial string, under randomized polynomial-time reductions. Our proofs are algorithmic information (a.k. a. Kolmogorov complexity) theoretic. We utilize black-box pseudorandom generator constructions, such as the Nisan-Wigderson generator, as a one-time encryption scheme secure against a program which “does not know” a random function. Our key technical contribution is to quantify the “knowledge” of a program by using conditional Kolmogorov complexity and show that no small program can know many random functions.

Most existing deep neural networks (DNNs) are inexplicable and fragile, which can be easily deceived by carefully designed adversarial example with tiny undetectable noise. This allows attackers to cause serious consequences in many DNN-assisted scenarios without human perception. In the field of speaker recognition, the attack for speaker recognition system has been relatively mature. Most works focus on white-box attacks that assume the information of the DNN is obtainable, and only a few works study gray-box attacks. In this paper, we study blackbox attacks on the speaker recognition system, which can be applied in the real world since we do not need to know the system information. By combining the idea of transferable attack and query attack, our proposed method NMI-FGSM-Tri can achieve the targeted goal by misleading the system to recognize any audio as a registered person. Specifically, our method combines the Nesterov accelerated gradient (NAG), the ensemble attack and the restart trigger to design an attack method that generates the adversarial audios with good performance to attack blackbox DNNs. The experimental results show that the effect of the proposed method is superior to the extant methods, and the attack success rate can reach as high as 94.8% even if only one query is allowed.

Historically, energy resources are of strategic importance for the social welfare and economic growth. So, predicting crude oil price fluctuations is an important issue. Since crude oil price changes are affected by many risk factors in markets, this price shows more complicated nonlinear behavior and creates more risk levels for investors than in the past. We propose a new method of prediction of crude oil price to model nonlinear dynamics. The results of the experiments show that the superior performance of the model based on the proposed method against statistical previous works is statistically significant. In general, we found that the combination of the IDBN or LSTM model lowered the MSE value to 4.65, which is 0.81 lower than the related work (Chen et al. protocol), indicating an improvement in prediction accuracy.

In the operation of information technology (IT) services, operators monitor the equipment-issued alarms, to locate the cause of a failure and take action. Alarms generate simultaneously from multiple devices with physical/logical connections. Therefore, if the time and location of the alarms are close to each other, it can be judged that the alarms are likely to be caused by the same event. In this paper, we propose a method that takes a novel approach by correlating alarms considering event units using a Bayesian network based on alarm generation time, generation place, and alarm type. The topology information becomes a critical decision element when doing the alarm correlation. However, errors may occur when topology information updates manually during failures or construction. Therefore, we show that event-by-event correlation with 100% accuracy is possible even if the topology information is 25% wrong by taking into location information other than topology information.

Hasnaeen, Shah Md Nehal, Chrysler, Andrew.  2022.  Detection of Malware in UHF RFID User Memory Bank using Random Forest Classifier on Signal Strength Data in the Frequency Domain. 2022 IEEE International Conference on RFID (RFID). :47–52.
A method of detecting UHF RFID tags with SQL in-jection virus code written in its user memory bank is explored. A spectrum analyzer took signal strength readings in the frequency spectrum while an RFID reader was reading the tag. The strength of the signal transmitted by the RFID tag in the UHF range, more specifically within the 902–908 MHz sub-band, was used as data to train a Random Forest model for Malware detection. Feature reduction is accomplished by dividing the observed spectrum into 15 ranges with a bandwidth of 344 kHz each and detecting the number of maxima in each range. The malware-infested tag could be detected more than 80% of the time. The frequency ranges contributing most in this detection method were the low (903.451-903.795 MHz, 902.418-902.762 MHz) and high (907.238-907.582 MHz) bands in the observed spectrum.

Ferroelectric capacitor memory devices with carbon-free Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) ferroelectric films are fabricated and characterized. The HZO ferroelectric films are deposited by ALD at temperatures from 225 to 300°C, with HfCl4 and ZrCl4 as the precursors. Residual chlorine from the precursors is measured and studied systematically with various process temperatures. 10nm HZO films with optimal ALD growth temperature at 275°C exhibit remanent polarization of 25µC/cm2 and cycle endurance of 5×1011. Results will be compared with those from HZO films deposited with carbon containing metal-organic precursors.

Study on the effect of nanosecond laser anneal (NLA) induced crystallization of ferroelectric (FE) Si-doped hafnium oxide (HSO) material is reported. The laser energy density (0.3 J/cm2 to 1.3 J/cm2) and pulse count (1.0 to 30) variations are explored as pathways for the HSO based metal-ferroelectric-metal (MFM) capacitors. The increase in energy density shows transition toward ferroelectric film crystallization monitored by the remanent polarization (2Pr) and coercive field (2Ec). The NLA conditions show maximum 2Pr (\$\textbackslashsim 24\textbackslash \textbackslashmu\textbackslashmathrmC/\textbackslashtextcmˆ2\$) comparable to the values obtained from reference rapid thermal processing (RTP). Reliability dependence in terms of fatigue (107 cycles) of MFMs on NLA versus RTP crystallization anneal is highlighted. The NLA based MFMs shows improved fatigue cycling at high fields for the low energy densities compared to an RTP anneal. The maximum fatigue cycles to breakdown shows a characteristic dependence on the laser energy density and pulse count. Leakage current and dielectric breakdown of NLA based MFMs at the transition of amorphous to crystalline film state is reported. The role of NLA based anneal on ferroelectric film crystallization and MFM stack reliability is reported in reference with conventional RTP based anneal.

Contrary to previous opinion, ‘frost shattering’ is not the only major contributor to rock weathering at mid latitudes and high elevations, more specifically along edges of bedrock escarpments. Lightning is also a significant contributor to land surface denudation. We can show this as lightning strikes on outcrops can dramatically alter the magnetic signature of rocks and is one of the main sources of noise in paleomagnetic studies. Igneous rocks in the highlands of Lesotho, southern Africa (\textgreater 3000 m elevation) provide an ideal study location, as flow lavas remain as prominent ridges that are relatively resistant to weathering. It is well known that lightning strikes can cause large remanent magnetization in rocks with little resultant variation in susceptibility. At two adjoining peaks in the Lesotho highlands, mapped freshly fractured rock correlates with areas of high magnetic intensity (remanent component), but little variation in susceptibility (related to the induced field), and is therefore a clear indicator of lightning damage. The majority of these mapped strike sites occur at the edges of topographic highs. Variations in magnetic intensity are correlated with the much lower resolution national lightning strikes dataset. These data confirm that high elevation edges of peak scarps are the focus of previous lightning strikes. This method of magnetic surveying compared with lightning strike data is a new method of confirming the locations of lightning strikes, and reduces the need for intensive paleomagnetic studies of the area to confirm remanence.

In this paper, we proposed a data security model of a big data analytical environment in the financial sector. Big Data can be seen as a trend in the advancement of technology that has opened the door to a new approach to understanding and decision making that is used to describe the vast amount of data (structured, unstructured and semi-structured) that is too time consuming and costly to load a relational database for analysis. The increase in cybercriminal attacks on an organization’s assets results in organizations beginning to invest in and care more about their cybersecurity points and controls. The management of business-critical data is an important point for which robust cybersecurity controls should be considered. The proposed model is applied in a datalake and allows the identification of security gaps on an analytical repository, a cybersecurity risk analysis, design of security components and an assessment of inherent risks on high criticality data in a repository of a regulated financial institution. The proposal was validated in financial entities in Lima, Peru. Proofs of concept of the model were carried out to measure the level of maturity focused on: leadership and commitment, risk management, protection control, event detection and risk management. Preliminary results allowed placing the entities in level 3 of the model, knowing their greatest weaknesses, strengths and how these can affect the fulfillment of business objectives.

Bátrla, Michael, Harašta, Jakub.  2022.  ‘Releasing the Hounds?’1 Disruption of the Ransomware Ecosystem Through Offensive Cyber Operations 2022 14th International Conference on Cyber Conflict: Keep Moving! (CyCon). 700:93–115.
Ransomware groups represent a significant cyber threat to Western states. Most high-end ransomware actors reside in territorial safe-haven jurisdictions and prove to be resistant to traditional law enforcement activities. This has prompted public sector and cybersecurity industry leaders to perceive ransomware as a national security threat requiring a whole-of-government approach, including cyber operations. In this paper, we investigate whether cyber operations or the threat of cyber operations influence the ransomware ecosystem. Subsequently, we assess the vectors of influence and characteristics of past operations that have disrupted the ecosystem. We describe the specifics of the ransomware-as-a-service system and provide three case studies (DarkSide/BlackMatter, REvil, Conti) highly representative of the current ecosystem and the effect cyber operations have on it. Additionally, we present initial observations about the influence of cyber operations on the system, including best practices from cyber operations against non-state groups. We conclude that even professional, highly skilled, and top-performing ransomware groups can be disrupted through cyber operations. In fact, cyber operations can even bypass some limits imposed on law enforcement operations. Even when ransomware groups rebrand or resurface after a hiatus, we suggest their infrastructure (both technical, human, and reputational) will still suffer mid-to long-term disruption. Although cyber operations are unlikely to be a silver bullet, they are an essential tool in the whole-of-government and multinational efforts and may even grow in importance in the next several years.1‘Releasing the hounds’ is a term for offensive cyber operations aimed at disrupting global ransomware gangs, especially those conducted by militaries or intelligence agencies. Malicious attacks, malware, and ransomware families pose critical security issues to cybersecurity, and it may cause catastrophic damages to computer systems, data centers, web, and mobile applications across various industries and businesses. Traditional anti-ransomware systems struggle to fight against newly created sophisticated attacks. Therefore, state-of-the-art techniques like traditional and neural network-based architectures can be immensely utilized in the development of innovative ransomware solutions. In this paper, we present a feature selection-based framework with adopting different machine learning algorithms including neural network-based architectures to classify the security level for ransomware detection and prevention. We applied multiple machine learning algorithms: Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Naïve Bayes (NB), Logistic Regression (LR) as well as Neural Network (NN)-based classifiers on a selected number of features for ransomware classification. We performed all the experiments on one ransomware dataset to evaluate our proposed framework. The experimental results demonstrate that RF classifiers outperform other methods in terms of accuracy, F -beta, and precision scores.

He, Ze, Li, Shaoqing.  2022.  A Design of Key Generation Unit Based on SRAM PUF. 2022 2nd International Conference on Frontiers of Electronics, Information and Computation Technologies (ICFEICT). :136–140.
In the era of big data, information security is faced with many threats, among which memory data security of intelligent devices is an important link. Attackers can read the memory of specific devices, and then steal secrets, alter data, affect the operation of intelligent devices, and bring security threats. Data security is usually protected by encryption algorithm for device ciphertext conversion, so the safe generation and use of key becomes particularly important. In this paper, based on the advantages of SRAM PUF, such as real-time generation, power failure and disappearance, safety and reliability, a key generation unit is designed and implemented. BCH code is used as the error correction algorithm to generate 128-bit stable key, which provides a guarantee for the safe storage of intelligent devices.

Plaintext transmission is the major way of communication in the existing security and stability control (SSC) system of power grid. Such type of communication is easy to be invaded, camouflaged and hijacked by a third party, leading to a serious threat to the safe and stable operation of power system. Focusing on the communication security in SSC system, the authors use asymmetric encryption algorithm to encrypt communication messages, to generate random numbers through random noise of electrical quantities, and then use them to generate key pairs needed for encryption, at the same time put forward a set of key management mechanism for engineering application. In addition, the field engineering test is performed to verify that the proposed encryption method and management mechanism can effectively improve the communication in SSC system while ensuring the high-speed and reliable communication.

This paper presents a physically-secure wireless communication system utilizing orbital angular momentum (OAM) waves at 0.31THz. A trustworthy key distribution mechanism for symmetric key cryptography is proposed by exploiting random hopping among the orthogonal OAM-wave modes and phases. Keccak-f[400] based pseudorandom number generator provides randomness to phase distribution of OAM-wave modes for additional security. We assess the security vulnerabilities of using OAM modulation in a THz communication system under various physical-layer threat models as well as analyze the effectiveness of these threat models for varying attacker complexity levels under different conditions.

A novel secure physical layer key generation method for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) against an attacker is proposed under fading and Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). In the proposed method, a random sequence key is added to the demodulated sequence to generate a unique pre-shared key (PSK) to enhance security. Extensive computer simulation results proved that an attacker cannot extract the same legitimate PSK generated by the received vehicle even if identical fading and AWGN parameters are used both for the legitimate vehicle and attacker.

An often overlooked but equally important aspect of unmanned aerial system (UAS) design is the security of their networking protocols and how they deal with cyberattacks. In this context, cyberattacks are malicious attempts to monitor or modify incoming and outgoing data from the system. These attacks could target anywhere in the system where a transfer of data occurs but are most common in the transfer of data between the control station and the UAS. A compromise in the networking system of a UAS could result in a variety of issues including increased network latency between the control station and the UAS, temporary loss of control over the UAS, or a complete loss of the UAS. A complete loss of the system could result in the UAS being disabled, crashing, or the attacker overtaking command and control of the platform, all of which would be done with little to no alert to the operator. Fortunately, the majority of higher-end, enterprise, and government UAS platforms are aware of these threats and take actions to mitigate them. However, as the consumer market continues to grow and prices continue to drop, network security may be overlooked or ignored in favor of producing the lowest cost product possible. Additionally, these commercial off-the-shelf UAS often use uniform, standardized frequency bands, autopilots, and security measures, meaning a cyberattack could be developed to affect a wide variety of models with minimal changes. This paper will focus on a low-cost educational-use UAS and test its resilience to a variety of cyberattack methods, including man-in-the-middle attacks, spoofing of data, and distributed denial-of-service attacks. Following this experiment will be a discussion of current cybersecurity practices for counteracting these attacks and how they can be applied onboard a UAS. Although in this case the cyberattacks were tested against a simpler platform, the methods discussed are applicable to any UAS platform attempting to defend against such cyberattack methods.

The recent experience in the use of virtual reality (VR) technology has shown that users prefer Electromyography (EMG) sensor-based controllers over hand controllers. The results presented in this paper show the potential of EMG-based controllers, in particular the Myo armband, to identify a computer system user. In the first scenario, we train various classifiers with 25 keyboard typing movements for training and test with 75. The results with a 1-dimensional convolutional neural network indicate that we are able to identify the user with an accuracy of 93% by analyzing only the EMG data from the Myo armband. When we use 75 moves for training, accuracy increases to 96.45% after cross-validation.

Smart Phones being a revolution in this Modern era which is considered a boon as well as a curse, it is a known fact that most kids of the current generation are addictive to smartphones. The National Institute of Health (NIH) has carried out different studies such as exposure of smartphones to children under 12 years old, health risk associated with their usage, social implications, etc. One such study reveals that children who spend more than two hours a day, on smartphones have been seen performing poorly when it comes to language and cognitive skills. In addition, children who spend more than seven hours per day were diagnosed to have a thinner brain cortex. Hence, it is of great importance to control the amount of exposure of children to smartphones, as well as access to irregulated content. Significant research work has gone in this regard with a plethora of inputs features, feature extraction techniques, and machine learning models. This paper is a survey of the State-of-the-art techniques in detecting the age of the user using machine learning models on touch, keystroke dynamics, and sensor data.

Pauses in typing are generally considered to indicate cognitive processing and so are of interest in educational contexts. While much prior work has looked at typing behavior of Computer Science students, this paper presents results of a study specifically on the pausing behavior of students in Introductory Computer Programming. We investigate the frequency of pauses of different lengths, what last actions students take before pausing, and whether there is a correlation between pause length and performance in the course. We find evidence that frequency of pauses of all lengths is negatively correlated with performance, and that, while some keystrokes initiate pauses consistently across pause lengths, other keystrokes more commonly initiate short or long pauses. Clustering analysis discovers two groups of students, one that takes relatively fewer mid-to-long pauses and performs better on exams than the other.

User authentication based on muscle tension manifested during password typing seems to be an interesting additional layer of security. It represents another way of verifying a person’s identity, for example in the context of continuous verification. In order to explore the possibilities of such authentication method, it was necessary to create a capturing software that records and stores data from EMG (electromyography) sensors, enabling a subsequent analysis of the recorded data to verify the relevance of the method. The work presented here is devoted to the design, implementation and evaluation of such a solution. The solution consists of a protocol and a software application for collecting multimodal data when typing on a keyboard. Myo armbands on both forearms are used to capture EMG and inertial data while additional modalities are collected from a keyboard and a camera. The user experience evaluation of the solution is presented, too.

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is a widely adopted architecture that uses web services, which have become increasingly important in the development and integration of applications. Its purpose is to allow information system technologies to interact by exchanging messages between sender and recipient using the simple object access protocol (SOAP), an XML document, or the HTTP protocol. We will attempt to provide an overview and analysis of standards in the field of web service security, specifically SOAP messages, using Kerberos authentication, which is a computer network security protocol that provides users with high security for requests between two or more hosts located in an unreliable location such as the internet.Everything that has to do with Kerberos has to deal with systems that rely on data authentication.
