From an information-theoretic standpoint, the intrusion detection process can be examined. Given the IDS output(alarm data), we should have less uncertainty regarding the input (event data). We propose the Capability of Intrusion Detection (CID) measure, which is simply the ratio of mutual information between IDS input and output, and the input of entropy. CID has the desirable properties of (1) naturally accounting for all important aspects of detection capability, such as true positive rate, false positive rate, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and base rate, (2) objectively providing an intrinsic measure of intrusion detection capability, and (3) being sensitive to IDS operation parameters. When finetuning an IDS, we believe that CID is the best performance metric to use. In terms of the IDS’ inherent ability to classify input data, the so obtained operation point is the best that it can achieve.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is developing rapidly, permeating every aspect of human life. Although the integration between AI and communication contributes to the flourishing development of wireless communication, it induces severer security problems. As a supplement to the upper-layer cryptography protocol, physical layer security has become an intriguing technology to ensure the security of wireless communication systems. However, most of the current physical layer security research does not consider the intelligence and mobility of collusive eavesdroppers. In this paper, we consider a MIMO system model with a friendly intelligent jammer against multiple collusive intelligent eavesdroppers, and zero-sum game is exploited to formulate the confrontation of them. The Nash equilibrium is derived by convex optimization and alternative optimization in the free-space scenario of a single user system. We propose a zero-sum game deep learning algorithm (ZGDL) for general situations to solve non-convex game problems. In terms of the effectiveness, simulations are conducted to confirm that the proposed algorithm can obtain the Nash equilibrium.

Nagabhushana Babu, B, Gunasekaran, M.  2022.  An Analysis of Insider Attack Detection Using Machine Learning Algorithms. 2022 IEEE 2nd International Conference on Mobile Networks and Wireless Communications (ICMNWC). :1—7.
Among the greatest obstacles in cybersecurity is insider threat, which is a well-known massive issue. This anomaly shows that the vulnerability calls for specialized detection techniques, and resources that can help with the accurate and quick detection of an insider who is harmful. Numerous studies on identifying insider threats and related topics were also conducted to tackle this problem are proposed. Various researches sought to improve the conceptual perception of insider risks. Furthermore, there are numerous drawbacks, including a dearth of actual cases, unfairness in drawing decisions, a lack of self-optimization in learning, which would be a huge concern and is still vague, and the absence of an investigation that focuses on the conceptual, technological, and numerical facets concerning insider threats and identifying insider threats from a wide range of perspectives. The intention of the paper is to afford a thorough exploration of the categories, levels, and methodologies of modern insiders based on machine learning techniques. Further, the approach and evaluation metrics for predictive models based on machine learning are discussed. The paper concludes by outlining the difficulties encountered and offering some suggestions for efficient threat identification using machine learning.

The 6G wireless communication networks are being studied to build a powerful networking system with global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligent level and security. This paper presents a four-in-one networking paradigm named 3CL-Net that would broaden and strengthen the capabilities of current networking by introducing ubiquitous computing, caching, and intelligence over the communication connection to build 6G-required capabilities. To evaluate the practicability of 3CL-Net, this paper designs a platform based on the 3CL-Net architecture. The platform adopts leader-followers structure that could support all functions of 3CL-Net, but separate missions of 3CL-Net into two parts. Moreover, this paper has implemented part of functions as a prototype, on which some experiments are carried out. The results demonstrate that 3CL-Net is potential to be a practical and effective network paradigm to meet future requirements, meanwhile, 3CL-Net could motivate designs of related platforms as well.

Metaverse opens up a new social networking paradigm where people can experience a real interactive feeling without physical space constraints. Social interactions are gradually evolving from text combined with pictures and videos to 3-dimensional virtual reality, making the social experience increasingly physical, implying that more metaverse applications with immersive experiences will be developed in the future. However, the increasing data dimensionality and volume for new metaverse applications present a significant challenge in data acquisition, security, and sharing. Furthermore, metaverse applications require high capacity and ultrareliability for the wireless system to guarantee the quality of user experience, which cannot be addressed in the current fifth-generation system. Therefore, reaching the metaverse is dependent on the revolution in the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication, which is expected to provide low-latency, high-throughput, and secure services. This article provides a comprehensive view of metaverse applications and investigates the fundamental technologies for the 6G toward metaverse.

Sivasankarareddy, V., Sundari, G..  2022.  Clustering-based routing protocol using FCM-RSOA and DNA cryptography algorithm for smart building. 2022 IEEE 2nd Mysore Sub Section International Conference (MysuruCon). :1—8.
The WSN nodes are arranged uniformly or randomly on the area of need for gathering the required data. The admin utilizes wireless broadband networks to connect to the Internet and acquire the required data from the base station (BS). However, these sensor nodes play a significant role in a variety of professional and industrial domains, but some of the concerns stop the growth of WSN, such as memory, transmission, battery power and processing power. The most significant issue with these restrictions is to increase the energy efficiency for WSN with rapid and trustworthy data transfer. In this designed model, the sensor nodes are clustered using the FCM (Fuzzy C-Means) clustering algorithm with the Reptile Search Optimization (RSO) for finding the centre of the cluster. The cluster head is determined by using African vulture optimization (AVO). For selecting the path of data transmission from the cluster head to the base station, the adaptive relay nodes are selected using the Fuzzy rule. These data from the base station are given to the server with a DNA cryptography encryption algorithm for secure data transmission. The performance of the designed model is evaluated with specific parameters such as average residual energy, throughput, end-to-end delay, information loss and execution time for a secure and energy-efficient routing protocol. These evaluated values for the proposed model are 0.91 %, 1.17Mbps, 1.76 ms, 0.14 % and 0.225 s respectively. Thus, the resultant values of the proposed model show that the designed clustering-based routing protocol using FCM-RSOA and DNA cryptography for smart building performs better compared to the existing techniques.

Considering the evidence that conditions accept a considerable place in each of the structures, owing to limited assets available at each sensor center, it is a difficult problem. Vitality safety is the primary concern in many of the implementations in remote sensor hubs. This is critical as the improvement in the lifetime of the device depends primarily on restricting the usage of vitality in sensor hubs. The rationing and modification of the usage of vitality are of the most serious value in this context. In a remote sensor arrangement, the fundamental test is to schedule measurements for the least use of vitality. These classification frameworks are used to frame the classes in the structure and help efficiently use the strength that burdens out the lifespan of the network. Besides, the degree of the center was taken into account in this work considering the measurement of cluster span as an improvement to the existing methods. The crucial piece of leeway of this suggested approach on affair clustering using fuzzy logic is which can increase the lifespan of the system by reducing the problem area problem word.

With the explosive growth of the internet of things (IoT) devices, there are amount of data requirements and computing tasks. Fog computing network that could provide computing, caching and communication resources closer to IoT devices (ID) is considered as a potential solution to deal with the vast computing tasks. To improve the performance of the fog computing network while ensuring data security, blockchain technology is enabled and a location-based reliable sharding (LRS) algorithm is proposed, which jointly considers the optimal number of shards, the geographical location of fog nodes (FNs), and the number of nodes in each shard. Firstly, the reliable sharding result is based on the reputation values of FNs, which are related to the decision information and historical reputation value of FNs in the consensus process. Moreover, a reputation based PBFT consensus algorithm is adopted to accelerate the consensus process. Furthermore, the normalized entropy is used to estimate the proportion of malicious nodes and optimize the number of shards. Finally, simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

With the ubiquitous advancement in smart medical devices and systems, the potential of Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) network is evolving in modern healthcare systems. The medical professionals (doctors, nurses, or medical experts) can access vitals and sensitive physiological information about the patients and provide proper treatment to improve the quality of life through the RPM network. However, the wireless nature of communication in the RPM network makes it challenging to design an efficient mechanism for secure communication. Many authentication schemes have been proposed in recent years to ensure the security of the RPM network. Pseudonym, digital signature, and Authenticated Key Exchange (AKE) protocols are used for the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) to develop secure authorization and privacy-preserving communication. However, traditional authentication protocols face overhead challenges due to maintaining a large set of key-pairs or pseudonyms results on the hospital cloud server. In this research work, we identify this research gap and propose a novel secure and efficient privacy-preserving authentication scheme using cuckoo filters for the RPM network. The use of cuckoo filters in our proposed scheme provides an efficient way for mutual anonymous authentication and a secret shared key establishment process between medical professionals and patients. Moreover, we identify the misbehaving sensor nodes using a correlation-based anomaly detection model to establish secure communication. The security analysis and formal security validation using SPAN and AVISPA tools show the robustness of our proposed scheme against message modification attacks, replay attacks, and man-in-the-middle attacks.

The use of image data in multimedia communication based applications like military applications and medical images security applications are increasing every day and the secrecy of the image data is extremely important for such applications. A number of methods and techniques for securely transmitting images are proposed in the literature based on image encryption and steganography approaches. A novel mechanism for transmitting color images securely is proposed in this paper mainly based on public key cryptography mechanism also by combining the advantage of simplicity of symmetric schemes. The technique combines the strengths of Elliptic Curve Cryptography and the classical symmetric cryptographic mechanism called Hill Cipher encryption method. The technique also includes the concept of Magic Square for jumbling the pixels yielding maximum diffusion in the image pixels. In the performance evaluation, the proposed method proved that the new system works pretty well. The method is proved to be effective in maintaining the confidentiality of the image in transit and also for resisting security attacks.

The Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) standard aims to reduce the attack surface for IoT devices by locking down their behavior to a formally-specified set of network flows (access control entries). Formal network behaviors can also be systematically and rigorously verified in any operating environment. Enforcing MUD flows and monitoring their activity in real-time can be relatively effective in securing IoT devices; however, its scope is limited to endpoints (domain names and IP addresses) and transport-layer protocols and services. Therefore, misconfigured or compromised IoTs may conform to their MUD-specified behavior but exchange unintended (or even malicious) contents across those flows. This paper develops PicP-MUD with the aim to profile the information content of packet payloads (whether unencrypted, encoded, or encrypted) in each MUD flow of an IoT device. That way, certain tasks like cyber-risk analysis, change detection, or selective deep packet inspection can be performed in a more systematic manner. Our contributions are twofold: (1) We analyze over 123K network flows of 6 transparent (e.g., HTTP), 11 encrypted (e.g., TLS), and 7 encoded (e.g., RTP) protocols, collected in our lab and obtained from public datasets, to identify 17 statistical features of their application payload, helping us distinguish different content types; and (2) We develop and evaluate PicP-MUD using a machine learning model, and show how we achieve an average accuracy of 99% in predicting the content type of a flow.

Wireless sensor networks are used in many areas such as war field surveillance, monitoring of patient, controlling traffic, environmental and building surveillance. Wireless technology, on the other hand, brings a load of new threats with it. Because WSNs communicate across radio frequencies, they are more susceptible to interference than wired networks. The authors of this research look at the goals of WSNs in terms of security as well as DDOS attacks. The majority of techniques are available for detecting DDOS attacks in WSNs. These alternatives, on the other hand, stop the assault after it has begun, resulting in data loss and wasting limited sensor node resources. The study finishes with a new method for detecting the UDP Reflection Amplification Attack in WSN, as well as instructions on how to use it and how to deal with the case.

Wintenberg, Andrew, Lafortune, Stéphane, Ozay, Necmiye.  2022.  Communication Obfuscation for Privacy and Utility against Obfuscation-Aware Eavesdroppers. 2022 American Control Conference (ACC). :3363—3363.
Networked cyber-physical systems must balance the utility of communication for monitoring and control with the risks of revealing private information. Many of these networks, such as wireless communication, are vulnerable to eavesdrop-ping by illegitimate recipients. Obfuscation can hide information from eaves-droppers by ensuring their observations are ambiguous or misleading. At the same time, coordination with recipients can enable them to interpret obfuscated data. In this way, we propose an obfuscation framework for dynamic systems that ensures privacy against eavesdroppers while maintaining utility for legitimate recipients. We consider eavesdroppers unaware of obfuscation by requiring that their observations are consistent with the original system, as well as eaves-droppers aware of the goals of obfuscation by assuming they learn of the specific obfuscation implementation used. We present a method for bounded synthesis of solutions based upon distributed reactive synthesis and the synthesis of publicly-known obfuscators.

In recent years, research has focused on exploiting the inherent physical (PHY) characteristics of wireless channels to discriminate between different spatially separated network terminals, mitigating the significant costs of signature-based techniques. In this paper, the legitimacy of the corresponding terminal is firstly verified at the protocol stack’s upper layers, and then the re-authentication process is performed at the PHY-layer. In the latter, a unique PHY-layer signature is created for each transmission based on the spatially and temporally correlated channel attributes within the coherence time interval. As part of the verification process, the PHY-layer signature can be used as a message authentication code to prove the packet’s authenticity. Extensive simulation has shown the capability of the proposed scheme to support high detection probability at small signal-to-noise ratios. In addition, security evaluation is conducted against passive and active attacks. Computation and communication comparisons are performed to demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides superior performance compared to conventional cryptographic approaches.

Physical-layer key (PLK) generation scheme is a new key generation scheme based on wireless channel reciprocity. However, the security of physical layer keys still lacks sufficient theoretical support in the presence of eavesdropping attacks until now, which affects the promotion in practical applications. By analyzing the propagation mode of multipath signals under non-line-of-sight (nLoS), an improved spatial cross-correlation model is constructed, where the spatial cross-correlation is between eavesdropping channel and legitimate channel. Results show that compared with the multipath and obstacle distribution of the channel, the azimuth and distance between the eavesdropper and the eavesdropped user have a greater impact on the cross-correlation.

In covert communication systems, covert messages can be transmitted without being noticed by the monitors or adversaries. Therefore, the covert communication technology has emerged as a novel method for network authentication, copyright protection, and the evidence of cybercrimes. However, how to design the covert communication in the physical layer of wireless networks and how to improve the channel capacity for the covert communication systems are very challenging. In this paper, we propose a wireless covert communication system, where data streams from the antennas of the transmitter are coded according to a code book to transmit covert and public messages. We adopt a modulation scheme, named covert quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), to modulate the messages, where the constellation of covert information bits deviates from its normal coordinates. Moreover, the covert receiver can detect the covert information bits according to the constellation departure. Simulation results show that proposed covert communication system can significantly improve the covert data rate and reduce the covert bit error rate, in comparison with the traditional covert communication systems.

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs), a class of complex intelligent systems, are considered the backbone of Industry 4.0. They aim to achieve large-scale, networked control of dynamical systems and processes such as electricity and gas distribution networks and deliver pervasive information services by combining state-of-the-art computing, communication, and control technologies. However, CPSs are often highly nonlinear and uncertain, and their intrinsic reliance on open communication platforms increases their vulnerability to security threats, which entails additional challenges to conventional control design approaches. Indeed, sensor measurements and control command signals, whose integrity plays a critical role in correct controller design, may be interrupted or falsely modified when broadcasted on wireless communication channels due to cyber attacks. This can have a catastrophic impact on CPS performance. In this paper, we first conduct a thorough analysis of recently developed secure and resilient control approaches leveraging the solid foundations of adaptive control theory to achieve security and resilience in networked CPSs against sensor and actuator attacks. Then, we discuss the limitations of current adaptive control strategies and present several future research directions in this field.

In construction machinery, connectivity delivers higher advantages in terms of higher productivity, lower costs, and most importantly safer work environment. As the machinery grows more dependent on internet-connected technologies, data security and product cybersecurity become more critical than ever. These machines have more cyber risks compared to other automotive segments since there are more complexities in software, larger after-market options, use more standardized SAE J1939 protocol, and connectivity through long-distance wireless communication channels (LTE interfaces for fleet management systems). Construction machinery also operates throughout the day, which means connected and monitored endlessly. Till today, construction machinery manufacturers are investigating the product cybersecurity challenges in threat monitoring, security testing, and establishing security governance and policies. There are limited security testing methodologies on SAE J1939 CAN protocols. There are several testing frameworks proposed for fuzz testing CAN networks according to [1]. This paper proposes security testing methods (Fuzzing, Pen testing) for in-vehicle communication protocols in construction machinery.

A power amplifier(PA) is inherently nonlinear device and is used in a communication system widely. Due to the nonlinearity of PA, the communication system is hard to work well. Digital predistortion (DPD) is the way to solve this problem. Using Volterra function to fit the PA is what most DPD solutions do. However, when it comes to wideband signal, there is a deduction on the performance of the Volterra function. In this paper, we replace the Volterra function with B-spline function which performs better on fitting PA at wideband signal. And the other benefit is that the orthogonality of coding matrix A could be improved, enhancing the stability of computation. Additionally, we use compressive sampling to reduce the complexity of the function model.

Ghaffaripour, Shadan, Miri, Ali.  2022.  Parasite Chain Attack Detection in the IOTA Network. 2022 International Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing (IWCMC). :985–990.
Distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) based on Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) have been gaining much attention due to their performance advantage over the traditional blockchain. IOTA is an example of DAG-based DLT that has shown its significance in the Internet of Things (IoT) environment. Despite that, IOTA is vulnerable to double-spend attacks, which threaten the immutability of the ledger. In this paper, we propose an efficient yet simple method for detecting a parasite chain, which is one form of attempting a double-spend attack in the IOTA network. In our method, a score function measuring the importance of each transaction in the IOTA network is employed. Any abrupt change in the importance of a transaction is reflected in the 1st and 2nd order derivatives of this score function, and therefore used in the calculation of an anomaly score. Due to how the score function is formulated, this anomaly score can be used in the detection of a particular type of parasite chain, characterized by sudden changes in the in-degree of a transaction in the IOTA graph. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is accurate and linearly scalable in the number of edges in the network.

Liu, Zhiwei, Du, Qinghe.  2022.  Self-coupling Encryption via Polar Codes for Secure Wireless Transmission. 2022 International Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing (IWCMC). :384–388.
In this paper, we studies secure wireless transmission using polar codes which based on self-coupling encryption for relay-wiretap channel. The coding scheme proposed in this paper divide the confidential message into two parts, one part used to generate key through a specific extension method, and then use key to perform coupling encryption processing on another part of the confidential message to obtain the ciphertext. The ciphertext is transmitted in the split-channels which are good for relay node, legitimate receiver and eavesdropper at the same time. Legitimate receiver can restore key with the assistance of relay node, and then uses the joint successive cancellation decoding algorithm to restore confidential message. Even if eavesdropper can correctly decode the ciphertext, he still cannot restore the confidential message due to the lack of key. Simulation results show that compared with the previous work, our coding scheme can increase the average code rate to some extent on the premise of ensuring the reliability and security of transmission.
