Lingga, Patrick, Kim, Jeonghyeon, Bartolome, Jorge David Iranzo, Jeong, Jaehoon.  2021.  Automatic Data Model Mapper for Security Policy Translation in Interface to Network Security Functions Framework. 2021 International Conference on Information and Communication Technology Convergence (ICTC). :882–887.
The Interface to Network Security Functions (I2NSF) Working Group in Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) provides data models of interfaces to easily configure Network Security Functions (NSF). The Working Group presents a high-level data model and a low-level data model for configuring the NSFs. The high-level data model is used for the users to manipulate the NSFs configuration easily without any security expertise. But the NSFs cannot be configured using the high-level data model as it needs a low-level data model to properly deploy their security operation. For that reason, the I2NSF Framework needs a security policy translator to translate the high-level data model into the corresponding low-level data model. This paper improves the previously proposed Security Policy Translator by adding an Automatic Data Model Mapper. The proposed mapper focuses on the mapping between the elements in the high-level data model and the elements in low-level data model to automate the translation without the need for a security administrator to create a mapping table.

Vieira, Alfredo Menezes, Junior, Rubens de Souza Matos, Ribeiro, Admilson de Ribamar Lima.  2021.  Systematic Mapping on Prevention of DDoS Attacks on Software Defined Networks. 2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon). :1—8.
Cyber attacks are a major concern for network administrators as the occurrences of such events are continuously increasing on the Internet. Software-defined networks (SDN) enable many management applications, but they may also become targets for attackers. Due to the separation of the data plane and the control plane, the controller appears as a new element in SDN networks, allowing centralized control of the network, becoming a strategic target in carrying out an attack. According to reports generated by security labs, the frequency of the distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks has seen an increase in recent years, characterizing a major threat to the SDN. However, few research papers address the prevention of DDoS attacks on SDN. Therefore, this work presents a Systematic Mapping of Literature, aiming at identifying, classifying, and thus disseminating current research studies that propose techniques and methods for preventing DDoS attacks in SDN. When answering these questions, it was determined that the SDN controller was vulnerable to possible DDoS attacks. No prevention methods were found in the literature for the first phase of the attack (when attackers try to deceive users and infect the host). Therefore, the security of software-defined networks still needs improvement over DDoS attacks, despite the evident risk of an attack targeting the SDN controller.
Chu, Hung-Chi, Yan, Chan-You.  2021.  DDoS Attack Detection with Packet Continuity Based on LSTM Model. 2021 IEEE 3rd Eurasia Conference on IOT, Communication and Engineering (ECICE). :44—47.
Most information systems rely on the Internet to provide users with various services. Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks are currently one of the main cyber threats, which causes the system or network disabled. To ensure that the information system can provide services for users normally, it is important to detect the occurrence of DDoS attacks quickly and accurately. Therefore, this research proposes a system based on packet continuity to detect DDoS attacks. On average, it only takes a few milliseconds to collect a certain number of consecutive packets, and then DDoS attacks can be detected. Experimental results show that the accuracy of detecting DDoS attacks based on packet continuity is higher than 99.9% and the system response time is about 5 milliseconds.
Goldschmidt, Patrik, Kučera, Jan.  2021.  Defense Against SYN Flood DoS Attacks Using Network-based Mitigation Techniques. 2021 IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM). :772—777.

TCP SYN Flood is one of the most widespread DoS attack types performed on computer networks nowadays. As a possible countermeasure, we implemented and deployed modified versions of three network-based mitigation techniques for TCP SYN authentication. All of them utilize the TCP three-way handshake mechanism to establish a security association with a client before forwarding its SYN data. These algorithms are especially effective against regular attacks with spoofed IP addresses. However, our modifications allow deflecting even more sophisticated SYN floods able to bypass most of the conventional approaches. This comes at the cost of the delayed first connection attempt, but all subsequent SYN segments experience no significant additional latency (\textbackslashtextless; 0.2ms). This paper provides a detailed description and analysis of the approaches, as well as implementation details with enhanced security tweaks. The discussed implementations are built on top of the hardware-accelerated FPGA-based DDoS protection solution developed by CESNET and are about to be deployed in its backbone network and Internet exchange point at NIX.CZ.

Shams, Montasir, Pavia, Sophie, Khan, Rituparna, Pyayt, Anna, Gubanov, Michael.  2021.  Towards Unveiling Dark Web Structured Data. 2021 IEEE International Conference on Big Data (Big Data). :5275—5282.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that Web-search engines, together with the Knowledge Graphs and Bases, such as YAGO [46], DBPedia [13], Freebase [16], Google Knowledge Graph [52] provide rapid access to most structured information on the Web. However, taking a closer look reveals a so called "knowledge gap" [18] that is largely in the dark. For example, a person searching for a relevant job opening has to spend at least 3 hours per week for several months [2] just searching job postings on numerous online job-search engines and the employer websites. The reason why this seemingly simple task cannot be completed by typing in a few keyword queries into a search-engine and getting all relevant results in seconds instead of hours is because access to structured data on the Web is still rudimentary. While searching for a job we have many parameters in mind, not just the job title, but also, usually location, salary range, remote work option, given a recent shift to hybrid work places, and many others. Ideally, we would like to write a SQL-style query, selecting all job postings satisfying our requirements, but it is currently impossible, because job postings (and all other) Web tables are structured in many different ways and scattered all over the Web. There is neither a Web-scale generalizable algorithm nor a system to locate and normalize all relevant tables in a category of interest from millions of sources. Here we describe and evaluate on a corpus having hundreds of millions of Web tables [39], a new scalable iterative training data generation algorithm, producing high quality training data required to train Deep- and Machine-learning models, capable of generalizing to Web scale. The models, trained on such en-riched training data efficiently deal with Web scale heterogeneity compared to poor generalization performance of models, trained without enrichment [20], [25], [38]. Such models are instrumental in bridging the knowledge gap for structured data on the Web.

The dark web searching mechanism is unlike surface web searching. On one popular dark web, Tor dark web, the search is often directed by directory like services such as Hidden Wiki. The numerous dark web data collection mechanisms are discussed and implemented via crawling. The dark web crawler assumes seed link, i.e. hidden service from where the crawling begins. One such popular Tor directory service is Hidden Wiki. Most of the hidden services listed on the Hidden Wiki 2020 page became unreachable with the recent upgrade in the Tor version. The Hidden Wiki 2021 page has a limited listing of services compared to the Hidden Wiki 2020 page. This motivated authors of the present work to establish the role of Hidden wiki service in dark web research and proposed the hypothesis that the dark web could be reached better through customized harvested links than Hidden Wiki-like service. The work collects unique hidden services/ onion links using the opensource crawler TorBot and runs similarity analysis on collected pages to map to corresponding categories.

Zheng, Weijun, Chen, Ding, Duan, Jun, Xu, Hong, Qian, Wei, Gu, Leichun, Yao, Jiming.  2021.  5G Network Slice Configuration Based on Smart Grid. 2021 IEEE 4th Advanced Information Management, Communicates, Electronic and Automation Control Conference (IMCEC). 4:560—564.
The construction of a strong and smart grid is inseparable from the advancement of the power system, and the effective application of modern communication technologies allows the traditional grid to better transform into the energy Internet. With the advent of 5G, people pay close attention to the application of network slicing, not only as an emerging technology, but also as a new business model. In this article, we consider the delay requirements of certain services in the power grid. First, we analyze the security issues in network slicing and model the 5G core network slicing supply as a mixed integer linear programming problem. On this basis, a heuristic algorithm is proposed. According to the topological properties, resource utilization and delay of the slice nodes, the importance of them is sorted using the VIKOR method. In the slice link configuration stage, the shortest path algorithm is used to obtain the slice link physical path. Considering the delay of the slice link, a strategy for selecting the physical path is proposed. Simulations show that the scheme and algorithm proposed in this paper can achieve a high slice configuration success rate while ensuring the end-to-end delay requirements of the business, and meet the 5G core network slice security requirements.

Nur, Abdullah Yasin.  2021.  Combating DDoS Attacks with Fair Rate Throttling. 2021 IEEE International Systems Conference (SysCon). :1–8.
Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are among the most harmful cyberattack types in the Internet. The main goal of a DDoS defense mechanism is to reduce the attack's effect as close as possible to their sources to prevent malicious traffic in the Internet. In this work, we examine the DDoS attacks as a rate management and congestion control problem and propose a collaborative fair rate throttling mechanism to combat DDoS attacks. Additionally, we propose anomaly detection mechanisms to detect attacks at the victim site, early attack detection mechanisms by intermediate Autonomous Systems (ASes), and feedback mechanisms between ASes to achieve distributed defense against DDoS attacks. To reduce additional vulnerabilities for the feedback mechanism, we use a secure, private, and authenticated communication channel between AS monitors to control the process. Our mathematical model presents proactive resource management, where the victim site sends rate adjustment requests to upstream routers. We conducted several experiments using a real-world dataset to demonstrate the efficiency of our approach under DDoS attacks. Our results show that the proposed method can significantly reduce the impact of DDoS attacks with minimal overhead to routers. Moreover, the proposed anomaly detection techniques can help ASes to detect possible attacks and early attack detection by intermediate ASes.
McQuistin, Stephen, Band, Vivian, Jacob, Dejice, Perkins, Colin.  2021.  Investigating Automatic Code Generation for Network Packet Parsing. 2021 IFIP Networking Conference (IFIP Networking). :1—9.
Use of formal protocol description techniques and code generation can reduce bugs in network packet parsing code. However, such techniques are themselves complex, and don't see wide adoption in the protocol standards development community, where the focus is on consensus building and human-readable specifications. We explore the utility and effectiveness of new techniques for describing protocol data, specifically designed to integrate with the standards development process, and discuss how they can be used to generate code that is safer and more trustworthy, while maintaining correctness and performance.

In this study, we aim to find a method to autotag sentences specific to a domain. Our training data comprises short conversational sentences extracted from chat conversations between company's customer representatives and web site visitors. We manually tagged approximately 14 thousand visitor inputs into ten basic categories, which will later be used in a transformer-based language model with attention mechanisms for the ultimate goal of developing a chatbot application that can produce meaningful dialogue. We considered three different stateof- the-art models and reported their auto-tagging capabilities. We achieved the best performance with the bidirectional encoder representation from transformers (BERT) model. Implementation of the models used in these experiments can be cloned from our GitHub repository and tested for similar auto-tagging problems without much effort.

R., Nithin Rao, Sharma, Rinki.  2021.  Analysis of Interest and Data Packet Behaviour in Vehicular Named Data Network. 2021 IEEE Madras Section Conference (MASCON). :1–5.
Named Data Network (NDN) is considered to be the future of Internet architecture. The nature of NDN is to disseminate data based on the naming scheme rather than the location of the node. This feature caters to the need of vehicular applications, resulting in Vehicular Named Data Networks (VNDN). Although it is still in the initial stages of research, the collaboration has assured various advantages which attract the researchers to explore the architecture further. VNDN face challenges such as intermittent connectivity, mobility of nodes, design of efficient forwarding and naming schemes, among others. In order to develop effective forwarding strategies, behavior of data and interest packets under various circumstances needs to be studied. In this paper, propagation behavior of data and interest packets is analyzed by considering metrics such as Interest Satisfaction Ratio (ISR), Hop Count Difference (HCD) and Copies of Data Packets Processed (CDPP). These metrics are evaluated under network conditions such as varying network size, node mobility and amount of interest produced by each node. Simulation results show that data packets do not follow the reverse path of interest packets.

Verification code recognition system based on convolutional neural network. In order to strengthen the network security defense work, this paper proposes a novel verification code recognition system based on convolutional neural network. The system combines Internet technology and big data technology, combined with advanced captcha technology, can prevent hackers from brute force cracking behavior to a certain extent. In addition, the system combines convolutional neural network, which makes the verification code combine numbers and letters, which improves the complexity of the verification code and the security of the user account. Based on this, the system uses threshold segmentation method and projection positioning method to construct an 8-layer convolutional neural network model, which enhances the security of the verification code input link. The research results show that the system can enhance the complexity of captcha, improve the recognition rate of captcha, and improve the security of user accounting.

Kai, Yun, Qiang, Huang, Yixuan, Ma.  2021.  Construction of Network Security Perception System Using Elman Neural Network. 2021 2nd International Conference on Computer Communication and Network Security (CCNS). :187—190.
The purpose of the study is to improve the security of the network, and make the state of network security predicted in advance. First, the theory of neural networks is studied, and its shortcomings are analyzed by the standard Elman neural network. Second, the layers of the feedback nodes of the Elman neural network are improved according to the problems that need to be solved. Then, a network security perception system based on GA-Elman (Genetic Algorithm-Elman) neural network is proposed to train the network by global search method. Finally, the perception ability is compared and analyzed through the model. The results show that the model can accurately predict network security based on the experimental charts and corresponding evaluation indexes. The comparative experiments show that the GA-Elman neural network security perception system has a better prediction ability. Therefore, the model proposed can be used to predict the state of network security and provide early warnings for network security administrators.

Sultan, Nazatul H., Varadharajan, Vijay, Kumar, Chandan, Camtepe, Seyit, Nepal, Surya.  2021.  A Secure Access and Accountability Framework for Provisioning Services in Named Data Networks. 2021 40th International Symposium on Reliable Distributed Systems (SRDS). :164–175.
Named Data Networking (NDN) is an emerging network architecture, which is built by keeping data as its pivotal point. The in-network cache, one of the important characteristics, makes data packets to be available from multiple locations on the Internet. Hence data access control and their enforcement mechanisms become even more critical in the NDNs. In this paper, we propose a novel encryption-based data access control scheme using Role-Based Encryption (RBE). The inheritance property of our scheme provides a natural way to achieve efficient data access control over hierarchical content. This in turn makes our scheme suitable for large scale real world content-centric applications and services such as Netflix. Further, the proposed scheme introduces an anonymous signature-based authentication mechanism to reject bogus data requests nearer to the source, thereby preventing them from entering the network. This in turn helps to mitigate better denial of service attacks. In addition, the signature mechanism supports unlinkability, which is essential to prevent leakages of individual user's access patterns. Another major feature of the proposed scheme is that it provides accountability of the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) using batch signature verification. Moreover, we have developed a transparent and secure dispute resolution and payment mechanism using smart-contract and blockchain technologies. We present a formal security analysis of our scheme to show it is provably secure against Chosen Plaintext Attacks. We also demonstrate that our scheme supports more functionalities than the existing schemes and its performance is better in terms of computation, communication and storage.

In the upcoming advent of 6G networks, underwater communications are expected to play a relevant role in the context of overlapping hybrid wireless networks, following a multilayer architecture i.e., aerial-ground-underwater. The concept of Internet of Underwater Things defines different communication and networking technologies, as well as positioning and tracking services, suitable for harsh underwater scenarios. In this paper, we present a footprinting localization algorithm based on optical wireless signals in the visible range. The proposed technique is based on a hybrid Radio Frequency (RF) and Visible Light Communication (VLC) network architecture, where a central RF sensor node holds an environment channel gain map i.e., database, that is exploited for localization estimation computation. A recursive localization algorithm allows to estimate user positions with centimeter-based accuracy, in case of different turbidity scenarios.

Dax, Alexander, Künnemann, Robert.  2021.  On the Soundness of Infrastructure Adversaries. 2021 IEEE 34th Computer Security Foundations Symposium (CSF). :1–16.
Campus Companies and network operators perform risk assessment to inform policy-making, guide infrastructure investments or to comply with security standards such as ISO 27001. Due to the size and complexity of these networks, risk assessment techniques such as attack graphs or trees describe the attacker with a finite set of rules. This characterization of the attacker can easily miss attack vectors or overstate them, potentially leading to incorrect risk estimation. In this work, we propose the first methodology to justify a rule-based attacker model. Conceptually, we add another layer of abstraction on top of the symbolic model of cryptography, which reasons about protocols and abstracts cryptographic primitives. This new layer reasons about Internet-scale networks and abstracts protocols. We show, in general, how the soundness and completeness of a rule-based model can be ensured by verifying trace properties, linking soundness to safety properties and completeness to liveness properties. We then demonstrate the approach for a recently proposed threat model that quantifies the confidentiality of email communication on the Internet, including DNS, DNSSEC, and SMTP. Using off-the-shelf protocol verification tools, we discover two flaws in their threat model. After fixing them, we show that it provides symbolic soundness.
Wang, Haoyu.  2021.  Compression Optimization For Automatic Verification of Network Configuration. 2021 6th International Conference on Intelligent Computing and Signal Processing (ICSP). :1409–1412.
In the era of big data and artificial intelligence, computer networks have become an important infrastructure, and the Internet has become ubiquitous. The most basic property of computer networks is reachability. The needs of the modern Internet mainly include cost, performance, reliability, and security. However, even for experienced network engineers, it is very difficult to manually conFigure the network to meet the needs of the modern large-scale Internet. The engineers often make mistakes, which can cause network paralysis, resulting in incalculable losses. Due to the development of automatic reasoning technology, automatic verification of network configuration is used to avoid mistakes. Network verification is at least an NP-C problem, so it is necessary to compress the network to reduce the network scale, thereby reducing the network verification time. This paper proposes a new model of network modeling, which is more suitable for the verification of network configuration on common protocols (such as RIP, BGP). On the basis of the existing compression method, two compression rules are added to compress the modeled network, reducing network verification time and conducting network reachability verification experiments on common networks. The experimental results are slightly better than the current compression methods.

Zhai, Tongqing, Li, Yiming, Zhang, Ziqi, Wu, Baoyuan, Jiang, Yong, Xia, Shu-Tao.  2021.  Backdoor Attack Against Speaker Verification. ICASSP 2021 - 2021 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP). :2560–2564.
Speaker verification has been widely and successfully adopted in many mission-critical areas for user identification. The training of speaker verification requires a large amount of data, therefore users usually need to adopt third-party data (e.g., data from the Internet or third-party data company). This raises the question of whether adopting untrusted third-party data can pose a security threat. In this paper, we demonstrate that it is possible to inject the hidden backdoor for infecting speaker verification models by poisoning the training data. Specifically, we design a clustering-based attack scheme where poisoned samples from different clusters will contain different triggers (i.e., pre-defined utterances), based on our understanding of verification tasks. The infected models behave normally on benign samples, while attacker-specified unenrolled triggers will successfully pass the verification even if the attacker has no information about the enrolled speaker. We also demonstrate that existing back-door attacks cannot be directly adopted in attacking speaker verification. Our approach not only provides a new perspective for designing novel attacks, but also serves as a strong baseline for improving the robustness of verification methods. The code for reproducing main results is available at https://github.com/zhaitongqing233/Backdoor-attack-against-speaker-verification.

Mabe, Abigail, Nelson, Michael L., Weigle, Michele C..  2021.  Extending Chromium: Memento-Aware Browser. 2021 ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL). :310—311.
Users rely on their web browser to provide information about the websites they are visiting, such as the security state of the web page their viewing. Current browsers do not differentiate between the live Web and the past Web. If a user loads an archived web page, known as a memento, they have to rely on user interface (UI) elements within the page itself to inform them that the page they are viewing is not the live Web. Memento-awareness extends beyond recognizing a page that has already been archived. The browser should give users the ability to easily archive live web pages as they are browsing. This report presents a proof-of-concept browser that is memento-aware and is created by extending Google's open-source web browser Chromium.
Mueller, Tobias.  2021.  Let’s Attest! Multi-modal Certificate Exchange for the Web of Trust. 2021 International Conference on Information Networking (ICOIN). :758—763.
On the Internet, trust is difficult to obtain. With the rise of the possibility of obtaining gratis x509 certificates in an automated fashion, the use of TLS for establishing secure connections has significantly increased. However, other use cases, such as end-to-end encrypted messaging, do not yet have an easy method of managing trust in the public keys. This is particularly true for personal communication where two people want to securely exchange messages. While centralised solutions, such as Signal, exist, decentralised and federated protocols lack a way of conveniently and securely exchanging personal certificates. This paper presents a protocol and an implementation for certifying OpenPGP certificates. By offering multiple means of data transport protocols, it achieves robust and resilient certificate exchange between an attestee, the party whose key certificate is to be certified, and an attestor, the party who will express trust in the certificate once seen. The data can be transferred either via the Internet or via proximity-based technologies, i.e. Bluetooth or link-local networking. The former presents a challenge when the parties interested in exchanging certificates are not physically close, because an attacker may tamper with the connection. Our evaluation shows that a passive attacker learns nothing except the publicly visible metadata, e.g. the timings of the transfer while an active attacker can either have success with a very low probability or be detected by the user.

With the rapid development of the Internet and communication technologies, efficient management of cyberspace, safe monitoring and protection of various network assets can effectively improve the overall level of network security protection. Accurate, effective and comprehensive network asset detection is the prerequisite for effective network asset management, and it is also the basis for security monitoring and analysis. This paper proposed an artificial intelligence algorithm based scheme which accurately identify the website icon and help to determine the ownership of network assets. Through experiments based on data set collected from real network, the result demonstrate that the proposed scheme has higher accuracy and lower false alarm rate, and can effectively reduce the training cost.

Nowadays, Denial of Service (DOS) is a significant cyberattack that can happen on the Internet. This attack can be taken place with more than one attacker that in this case called Distributed Denial of Service (DDOS). The attackers endeavour to make the resources (server & bandwidth) unavailable to legitimate traffic by overwhelming resources with malicious traffic. An appropriate security module is needed to discriminate the malicious flows with high accuracy to prevent the failure resulting from a DDOS attack. In this paper, a DDoS attack discriminator will be designed for Software Defined Network (SDN) architecture so that it can be deployed in the POX controller. The simulation results present that the proposed model can achieve an accuracy of about 99.4%which shows an outstanding percentage of improvement compared with Decision Tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) approaches.
