Wang, Chen, Liu, Jian, Guo, Xiaonan, Wang, Yan, Chen, Yingying.  2018.  Inferring Mobile Payment Passcodes Leveraging Wearable Devices. Proceedings of the 24th Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking. :789–791.
Mobile payment has drawn considerable attention due to its convenience of paying via personal mobile devices at anytime and anywhere, and passcodes (i.e., PINs) are the first choice of most consumers to authorize the payment. This work demonstrates a serious security breach and aims to raise the awareness of the public that the passcodes for authorizing transactions in mobile payments can be leaked by exploiting the embedded sensors in wearable devices (e.g., smartwatches). We present a passcode inference system, which examines to what extent the user's PIN during mobile payment could be revealed from a single wrist-worn wearable device under different input scenarios involving either two hands or a single hand. Extensive experiments with 15 volunteers demonstrate that an adversary is able to recover a user's PIN with high success rate within 5 tries under various input scenarios.

Alami, Adam, Dittrich, Yvonne, Wąsowski, Andrzej.  2018.  Influencers of Quality Assurance in an Open Source Community. Proceedings of the 11th International Workshop on Cooperative and Human Aspects of Software Engineering. :61-68.
ROS (Robot Operating System) is an open source community in robotics that is developing standard robotics operating system facilities such as hardware abstraction, low-level device control, communication middleware, and a wide range of software components for robotics functionality. This paper studies the quality assurance practices of the ROS community. We use qualitative methods to understand how ideology, priorities of the community, culture, sustainability, complexity, and adaptability of the community affect the implementation of quality assurance practices. Our analysis suggests that software engineering practices require social and cultural alignment and adaptation to the community particularities to achieve seamless implementation in open source environments. This alignment should be incorporated into the design and implementation of quality assurance practices in open source communities.

Alzahrani, Ahmed, Johnson, Chris, Altamimi, Saad.  2018.  Information security policy compliance: Investigating the role of intrinsic motivation towards policy compliance in the organisation. 2018 4th International Conference on Information Management (ICIM). :125–132.
Recent behavioral research in information security has focused on increasing employees' motivation to enhance the security performance in an organization. This empirical study investigated employees' information security policy (ISP) compliance intentions using self-determination theory (SDT). Relevant hypotheses were developed to test the proposed research model. Data obtained via a survey (N=3D407) from a Fortune 600 organization in Saudi Arabia provides empirical support for the model. The results confirmed that autonomy, competence and the concept of relatedness all positively affect employees' intentions to comply. The variable 'perceived value congruence' had a negative effect on ISP compliance intentions, and the perceived legitimacy construct did not affect employees' intentions. In general, the findings of this study suggest that SDT has value in research into employees' ISP compliance intentions.

Oohama, Y., Santoso, B..  2018.  Information Theoretical Analysis of Side-Channel Attacks to the Shannon Cipher System. 2018 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory (ISIT). :581-585.
We study side-channel attacks for the Shannon cipher system. To pose side channel-attacks to the Shannon cipher system, we regard them as a signal estimation via encoded data from two distributed sensors. This can be formulated as the one helper source coding problem posed and investigated by Ahlswede, Korner(1975), and Wyner(1975). We further investigate the posed problem to derive new secrecy bounds. Our results are derived by a coupling of the result Watanabe and Oohama(2012) obtained on bounded storage eavesdropper with the exponential strong converse theorem Oohama(2015) established for the one helper source coding problem.

Human is the weakest link in information security. Even with strong cyber security policies an organization can still be hacked because of a human error. Even if people are aware of the policies and their importance they might not behave accordingly. This shows to the importance of studying and measuring human behavior toward cyber security policies. This paper introduces a new instrument that can be used to measure human behavior toward cybersecurity policies through creative measures. The goal is to gather data about human behaviors toward cybersecurity policies in natural environment. This method of gathering information allows people to behave normally and don't feel the need to answer perfectly. The paper illustrates all the previous work related to the subject, summarizing previous work in order to improve what have been previously done. The methodology seeks on measuring behavior based on specific measures. These measures are the password, email, identity, sensitive data, and physical/resource security. Each measure has a number of policies used to measure behavior. These policies were selected among several policies based on literature from the same field and the opinion of experts in the field. These question that went through several rounds of check were used to build the proposed-instrument. This instrument then shall be used by researchers to collect data and perform the required analysis. This paper discusses the behavior pattern in a detail and concise manner. The paper demonstrates that it is posable to measure behavior if the right we questions were asked in the right way.

In this paper, according to the electricity business process including collecting and transmitting power information and sending control instructions, a coupling model of control-communication flow is built which is composed of three main matrices: control-communication, communication-communication, communication-control incidence matrices. Furthermore, the effective path change between two communication nodes is analyzed and a calculation method of connectivity probability for information network is proposed when considering a breakdown in communication links. Then, based on Bayesian conditional probability theory, the effect of the communication interruption on the energy Internet is analyzed and the metric matrix of controllability is given under communication congestion. Several cases are given in the final of paper to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method for calculating controllability matrix by considering different link interruption scenarios. This probability index can be regarded as a quantitative measure of the controllability of the power service based on the communication transmission instructions, which can be used in the power business decision-making in order to improve the control reliability of the energy Internet.

Owing1 to an immense growth of internet-connected and learning-enabled cyber-physical systems (CPSs) [1], several new types of attack vectors have emerged. Analyzing security and resilience of these complex CPSs is difficult as it requires evaluating many subsystems and factors in an integrated manner. Integrated simulation of physical systems and communication network can provide an underlying framework for creating a reusable and configurable testbed for such analyses. Using a model-based integration approach and the IEEE High-Level Architecture (HLA) [2] based distributed simulation software; we have created a testbed for integrated evaluation of large-scale CPS systems. Our tested supports web-based collaborative metamodeling and modeling of CPS system and experiments and a cloud computing environment for executing integrated networked co-simulations. A modular and extensible cyber-attack library enables validating the CPS under a variety of configurable cyber-attacks, such as DDoS and integrity attacks. Hardware-in-the-loop simulation is also supported along with several hardware attacks. Further, a scenario modeling language allows modeling of alternative paths (Courses of Actions) that enables validating CPS under different what-if scenarios as well as conducting cyber-gaming experiments. These capabilities make our testbed well suited for analyzing security and resilience of CPS. In addition, the web-based modeling and cloud-hosted execution infrastructure enables one to exercise the entire testbed using simply a web-browser, with integrated live experimental results display.

SPARQL is a standard query language for knowledge graphs (KGs). However, it is hard to find correct answer if KGs are incomplete or incorrect. Knowledge graph embedding (KGE) enables answering queries on such KGs by inferring unknown knowledge and removing incorrect knowledge. Hence, our long-term goal in this line of research is to propose a new framework that integrates KGE and SPARQL, which opens various research problems to be addressed. In this paper, we solve one of the most critical problems, that is, optimizing the performance of nearest neighbor (NN) search. In our evaluations, we demonstrate that the search time of state-of-the-art NN search algorithms is improved by 40% without sacrificing answer accuracy.

The process of information and transformation of society has become a habit in modem people. We are accustomed to using the mobile phone for all kinds of operations, such as: sweep code to order meals, buy tickets and payment, thanks to the popularity of QR code technology in our country. There are many applications in the market with the function of scanning QR code, however, some QR codes can only be parsed by the specified application software. For instance, it can not work when using Alipay scanning QR code which configured by WeChat payment certificate Web program. The user will not be able to pay for such operations. For a product or service provider, different QR codes need to be created for different applications; for a user, a certain business operation needs to face multiple QR codes to select corresponding software in the device. The integration of QR code technology has become a key breakthrough point to improve the competitiveness of enterprises.

Detken, K., Jahnke, M., Humann, M., Rollgen, B..  2018.  Integrity and Non-Repudiation of VoIP Streams with TPM2.0 over Wi-Fi Networks. 2018 IEEE 4th International Symposium on Wireless Systems within the International Conferences on Intelligent Data Acquisition and Advanced Computing Systems (IDAACS-SWS). :82–87.
The complete digitization of telecommunications allows new attack scenarios, which have not been possible with legacy phone technologies before. The reason is that physical access to legacy phone technologies was necessary. Regarding internet-based communication like voice over the internet protocol (VoIP), which can be established between random nodes, eavesdropping can happen everywhere and much easier. Additionally, injection of undesirable communication like SPAM or SPIT in digital networks is simpler, too. Encryption is not sufficient because it is also necessary to know which participants are talking to each other. For that reason, the research project INTEGER has been started with the main goals of providing secure authentication and integrity of a VoIP communication by using a digital signature. The basis of this approach is the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) which works as a hardware-based trusted anchor. The TPM will be used inside of wireless IP devices with VoIP softphones. The question is if it is possible to fulfill the main goals of the project in wireless scenarios with Wi-Fi technologies. That is what this contribution aims to clarify.

Linking and brushing is an essential technique for interactive data exploration and analysis that leverages coordinated multiple views to identify, select, and combine data points of interest. We propose to augment this technique by directly exploring data space using textual queries. Textual and visual queries are freely combined and modified during the data exploration process. Visual queries are used to refine the results of textual queries and vice versa. This mixed brushing integrates procedural, textual, and visual based data exploration to provide a unified approach to brushing. We also propose an interface –- the Text Query Browser View, that allows users to specify and edit data queries as well as to browse the data query history. Further, we argue why an interactive, on-demand, data aggregation and derivation is necessary, and we provide a flexible mechanism that supports it. We have implemented the proposed approach within an existing visualization tool using a client-server architecture. The approach was illustrated and evaluated using two example data sets.

Atlam, Hany F., Walters, Robert J., Wills, Gary B..  2018.  Internet of Nano Things: Security Issues and Applications. Proceedings of the 2018 2Nd International Conference on Cloud and Big Data Computing. :71–77.
Nanotechnology provides new solutions for numerous applications that have a significant effect on almost every aspect of our community including health monitoring, smart cities, military, agriculture, and industry. The interconnection of nanoscale devices with existing communication networks over the Internet defines a novel networking paradigm called the Internet of Nano-Things (IoNT). The IoNT involves a large number of nanosensors that used to provide more precise and detailed information about a particular object to enable a better understanding of object behaviour. In this paper, we investigate the challenges and opportunities of the IoNT system in various applications. An overview of the IoNT is first introduced. This is followed by a discussion of the network architecture of the IoNT and various applications that benefit from integrating IoT with nanotechnology. In the end, since security is considered to be one of the main issues of the IoNT system, we provide an in-depth discussion on security goals, attack vectors and security challenges of the IoNT system.

Wang, Kuang-Ching, Brooks, Richard R., Barrineau, Geddings, Oakley, Jonathan, Yu, Lu, Wang, Qing.  2018.  Internet Security Liberated via Software Defined Exchanges. Proceedings of the 2018 ACM International Workshop on Security in Software Defined Networks & Network Function Virtualization. :19–22.
With software defined networking and network function virtualization technologies, networks can be programmed to have customized processing and paths for different traffic at manageable costs and for massive numbers of applications. Now, picture a future Internet where each entity - a person, an organization, or an autonomous system - has the ability to choose how traffic in their respective network sessions is routed and processed between itself and its counterparts. The network is, essentially, liberated from today's homogeneous IP-based routing and limited connection options. To realize such a network paradigm, we propose a software defined exchange architecture that can provide the needed network programmability, session-level customization, and scale. We present a case study for traffic-analysis-resistant communication among individuals, campuses, or web services, where IP addresses no longer need to have a one-to-one correspondence with service providers.

Bitcoin exchanges rely heavily on traditional intrusion detection system to secure their system. However, this reliance has proven to be high risk, since Bitcoin and other blockchain-based transactions are not easily reversible. Many of the attacks have shown that the traditional intrusion detection system is not enough to safeguard against all possible attacks, and most importantly, in some cases, it takes a long time to assess the damage. In this paper, we first describe three types of intrusion models in Bitcoin exchanges and propose a detection and mitigation system using blockchain analysis for each. The proposed detection and mitigation system exploit the decentralized and public nature of Bitcoin blockchain to complement the existing traditional intrusion detection system as a fail-safe. The proposed method provides real-time intrusion detection capability that the existing work cannot provide. Although the proposed method is specifically for Bitcoin blockchain, similar ideas can be extended to other proof-of-work based blockchain cryptocurrencies.

Abhilash, Goyal, Divyansh, Gupta.  2018.  Intrusion Detection and Prevention in Software Defined Networking. 2018 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunications Systems (ANTS). :1–4.
Software defined networking is a concept proposed to replace traditional networks by separating control plane and data plane. It makes the network more programmable and manageable. As there is a single point of control of the network, it is more vulnerable to intrusion. The idea is to train the network controller by machine learning algorithms to let it make the intelligent decisions automatically. In this paper, we have discussed our approach to make software defined networking more secure from various malicious attacks by making it capable of detecting and preventing such attacks.

Wang, Dinghua, Feng, Dongqin.  2018.  Intrusion Detection Model of SCADA Using Graphical Features. 2018 IEEE 3rd Advanced Information Technology, Electronic and Automation Control Conference (IAEAC). :1208–1214.
Supervisory control and data acquisition system is an important part of the country's critical infrastructure, but its inherent network characteristics are vulnerable to attack by intruders. The vulnerability of supervisory control and data acquisition system was analyzed, combining common attacks such as information scanning, response injection, command injection and denial of service in industrial control systems, and proposed an intrusion detection model based on graphical features. The time series of message transmission were visualized, extracting the vertex coordinates and various graphic area features to constitute a new data set, and obtained classification model of intrusion detection through training. An intrusion detection experiment environment was built using tools such as MATLAB and power protocol testers. IEC 60870-5-104 protocol which is widely used in power systems had been taken as an example. The results of tests have good effectiveness.

Vöelp, Marcus, Esteves-Verissimo, Paulo.  2018.  Intrusion-Tolerant Autonomous Driving. 2018 IEEE 21st International Symposium on Real-Time Distributed Computing (ISORC). :130–133.
Fully autonomous driving is one if not the killer application for the upcoming decade of real-time systems. However, in the presence of increasingly sophisticated attacks by highly skilled and well equipped adversarial teams, autonomous driving must not only guarantee timeliness and hence safety. It must also consider the dependability of the software concerning these properties while the system is facing attacks. For distributed systems, fault-and-intrusion tolerance toolboxes already offer a few solutions to tolerate partial compromise of the system behind a majority of healthy components operating in consensus. In this paper, we present a concept of an intrusion-tolerant architecture for autonomous driving. In such a scenario, predictability and recovery challenges arise from the inclusion of increasingly more complex software on increasingly less predictable hardware. We highlight how an intrusion tolerant design can help solve these issues by allowing timeliness to emerge from a majority of complex components being fast enough, often enough while preserving safety under attack through pre-computed fail safes.

Maggi, Federico, Balduzzi, Marco, Flores, Ryan, Gu, Lion, Ciancaglini, Vincenzo.  2018.  Investigating Web Defacement Campaigns at Large. Proceedings of the 2018 on Asia Conference on Computer and Communications Security. :443–456.
Website defacement is the practice of altering the web pages of a website after its compromise. The altered pages, calleddeface pages, can negatively affect the reputation and business of the victim site. Previous research has focused primarily on detection, rather than exploring the defacement phenomenon in depth. While investigating several defacements, we observed that the artifacts left by the defacers allow an expert analyst to investigate the actors' modus operandi and social structure, and expand from the single deface page to a group of related defacements (i.e., acampaign ). However, manually performing such analysis on millions of incidents is tedious, and poses scalability challenges. From these observations, we propose an automated approach that efficiently builds intelligence information out of raw deface pages. Our approach streamlines the analysts job by automatically recognizing defacement campaigns, and assigning meaningful textual labels to them. Applied to a comprehensive dataset of 13 million defacement records, from Jan. 1998 to Sept. 2016, our approach allowed us to conduct the first large-scale measurement on web defacement campaigns. In addition, our approach is meant to be adopted operationally by analysts to identify live campaigns on the field. We go beyond confirming anecdotal evidence. We analyze the social structure of modern defacers, which includes lone individuals as well as actors that cooperate with each others, or with teams, which evolve over time and dominate the scene. We conclude by drawing a parallel between the time line of World-shaping events and defacement campaigns, representing the evolution of the interests and orientation of modern defacers.

Emerging IoT technologies promise to bring revolutionary changes to many domains including health, transportation, and building management. However, continuous monitoring of individuals threatens privacy. The success of IoT thus depends on integrating privacy protections into IoT infrastructures. This demonstration adapts a recently-proposed system, PeGaSus, which releases streaming data under the formal guarantee of differential privacy, with a state-of-the-art IoT testbed (TIPPERS) located at UC Irvine. PeGaSus protects individuals' data by introducing distortion into the output stream. While PeGaSuS has been shown to offer lower numerical error compared to competing methods, assessing the usefulness of the output is application dependent. The goal of the demonstration is to assess the usefulness of private streaming data in a real-world IoT application setting. The demo consists of a game, IoT-Detective, in which participants carry out visual data analysis tasks on private data streams, earning points when they achieve results similar to those on the true data stream. The demo will educate participants about the impact of privacy mechanisms on IoT data while at the same time generating insights into privacy-utility trade-offs in IoT applications.

Khelf, Roumaissa, Ghoualmi-Zine, Nacira.  2018.  IPsec/Firewall Security Policy Analysis: A Survey. 2018 International Conference on Signal, Image, Vision and their Applications (SIVA). :1–7.
As the technology reliance increases, computer networks are getting bigger and larger and so are threats and attacks. Therefore Network security becomes a major concern during this last decade. Network Security requires a combination of hardware devices and software applications. Namely, Firewalls and IPsec gateways are two technologies that provide network security protection and repose on security policies which are maintained to ensure traffic control and network safety. Nevertheless, security policy misconfigurations and inconsistency between the policy's rules produce errors and conflicts, which are often very hard to detect and consequently cause security holes and compromise the entire system functionality. In This paper, we review the related approaches which have been proposed for security policy management along with surveying the literature for conflicts detection and resolution techniques. This work highlights the advantages and limitations of the proposed solutions for security policy verification in IPsec and Firewalls and gives an overall comparison and classification of the existing approaches.

Today, most conversational agents are limited to simple tasks supported by standalone commands, such as getting directions or scheduling an appointment. To support more complex tasks, agents must be able to generalize from and combine the commands they already understand. This paper presents a new approach to designing conversational agents inspired by linguistic theory, where agents can execute complex requests interactively by combining commands through nested conversations. We demonstrate this approach in Iris, an agent that can perform open-ended data science tasks such as lexical analysis and predictive modeling. To power Iris, we have created a domain-specific language that transforms Python functions into combinable automata and regulates their combinations through a type system. Running a user study to examine the strengths and limitations of our approach, we find that data scientists completed a modeling task 2.6 times faster with Iris than with Jupyter Notebook.
